Xfce Desktop freezes for a while

Hi,

a few days ago i installed xubuntu 16.04 and all the programs i need for work. yesterday i've noticed that the desktop freezes for al while: i can start a program using a symbol on the desktop. after some minutes the program starts and i can start program from the destop again and also can do all what  can do with the desktop (change settings or change the background wallpaper). when this happens and i want to restart or shutdown xubuntu it doesn't work. and again, when the desktop isn't freezed xubuntu goes down.

there is no error message or something. it still doesn't react. ALL other things are working, i can start program with ALT+F2 or the Start Menu.

Re: Xfce Desktop freezes for a while

Look for any error messages in ~/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log when the hang happens. Best to keep a terminal window open running the following command:

tail -f ~/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log

...so that you can see the messages live.

Re: Xfce Desktop freezes for a while

Can you post back the results of the following commands

ps -ef | grep -i desktop
xfconf-query -c xsettings -lv

Do you notice freezes elsewhere? Like when you are using one of the programs.

Also, try creating a second new (fresh) account on your computer and log in using that account. See if you freeze happens there.

Re: Xfce Desktop freezes for a while

Did the problem exist with a secondary user account on the same system?

Re: Xfce Desktop freezes for a while

maybe i've found the reason for the problems. i used a hard drive with an ntfs partition and it looked like the hard drive worked very good. but now i tried to create a new partition and had problems creating a new. this failed on ubuntu and windows. now i've changed the hard drive and created my ntfs partition on the new one and there is no freezing anymore.

but this was not the boot disc where xubuntu is installed and there are so system data on it. the partition was only used to store data that i need on ubuntu AND windows.
