Plugin in panel missing - sometimes ?

Fresh installed DEBIAN Stretch here

Notice, that time/date plugin is missing sometimes after reboot/restart.

Should be between pulseaudio and trash.

No idea, what to look for ...

Re: Plugin in panel missing - sometimes ?

Does it happen only on logout / login? If you manually restart the panel (via "xfce4-panel -r") do some of the plugins not appear?

If so, try quitting xfce4-panel:

xfce4-panel -q

...and starting it back up in debug mode:

PANEL_DEBUG=1 xfce4-panel

...and check the debug code for any errors.

Re: Plugin in panel missing - sometimes ?

Thank you, at the moment I can not reproduce that behavior.

xfce4-panel -r

and logout/login without that "feature".

But I'll keep an eye on it.

Re: Plugin in panel missing - sometimes ?

Did (in meantime)

8 x  "normal" start/shutdown

1 x suspend to ram

4 x logout/login

Behavior never showed up again

Strange ....

Today that error showed up again.

"date and time" missing in panel #2 as seen in pic here (1st post)

Did as advised, I see some warnings, but no errors ...

Re: Plugin in panel missing - sometimes ?

When you ran xfce4-panel in debug mode, did the date/time plugin appear? According to that output, it is properly registered and embedded.

Sorry, missed that. Yes, after starting "xfce4-panel in debug mode" date/time plugin was there again.

I think, I should look here for errors BEFORE doing a "xfce4-panel -q" and "PANEL_DEBUG=1 xfce4-panel".

Are those the places to look for errors BEFORE restarting the panels?

".xsession-errors" and ".xfce4-session.verbose-log" or are errors in xfce logged somewhere else?

Re: Plugin in panel missing - sometimes ?

You can try this:

With root privileges, create the file /usr/local/bin/xfce4-panel with the following content:

#!/bin/bash

export PANEL_DEBUG=1
/usr/bin/xfce4-panel > /tmp/xfce4-panel.log 2>&1

...and make the file executable.

Log out and back in again and if the problem happens, have a look at the /tmp/xfce4-panel.log file.

What this does is the system will run this new xfce-panel executable in /usr/local/bin instead of the real one. This script sets up debug mode and runs the real xfce4-panel executable saving debug log info to /tmp/xfce4-panel.log. When you are done with the troubleshooting, rename the xfce4-panel file in /usr/local/bin and the system will return to running the real one.

Should it not be "delete" instead of "rename"?

Re: Plugin in panel missing - sometimes ?

Rename it to keep a copy around in case you want to enable it again.
