Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

I am having an issue with my Dell P2715Q monitor not waking up from “standby”, “suspend”, and “off” properly. This problem seems to only occur on Linux and not with Windows 10. The monitor is connected through a display port.

This issue does not seem to occur with just X windows running (no window manager). Also, I have not noticed the issue prior to logging into XFCE4 using LightDM. I think this suggests the problem is occurring within XFCE4

I have created a script using the output from "xscreensaver-command -watch" to use xrandr to turn the screen on, but this is a bit of a band-aide since the screen becomes visible behind the screen saver while the Dell monitor is being turned back on by the script making it rather useless.

Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

Hello and welcome.

There was an issue with display port (and other) connections that was fixed and included as part of 4.12.1 (I believe this commit - bug report referenced inside). There is also this more recent enhancement to support eDP connections.

  1. Which distro and what version of Xfce are you using?

  2. Which version of xfce4-settings are you using? You can get it via:

    xfsettingsd -V
  3. What kind of display port connection is it? How does xrandr identify it?

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

Thank you for the information.

1. I am running Linux Mint 18 Sarah.  I have tried various kernel versions and various versions of the NVIDIA drivers, but they do not seem to affect the problem. I am currently running kernel 4.13.0-26-generic since this version has been patched for Meltdown and Spectre. The output from apt install xfce4 is: "xfce4 is already the newest version (4.12.2)".

When the monitor is sleeping and I press the keyboard, the Dell monitor briefly shows a box saying "Entering energy saver mode" and then goes blank. If I type    "xrandr --output DP-2 --left-of DVI-D-0 –auto" it does turn the monitor back on.  It feels like it gets awakened but never gets assigned as an the output device like xrandr is doing when executed manually.

2. The output from xfsettingsd -V is: "xfsettingsd 4.12.0 (Xfce 4.12)"

3. The display port is a standard HDMI sized DP connection. I have also tried the mDP port as well and different cables. Those variations did not correct the issue. Using HDMI output instead does correct the problem, however that port only supports half the refresh rate at 3840x2160 resolution so that is not a useful option.

Xrandr identifies it as DP-2. Here is the complete output:

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 5520 x 2160, maximum 32767 x 32767

4.12.1 has the fixes from the commit above. Check to see if the newer version is available in your repositories.

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

Toz, I also run Mint (although I've been holding off on the upgrade to Mint 18.3 (aka "Sarah" roll ) ), and I'm pretty sure that - if a newer version of xfseddingsd was available in Mint's repos - it would have been a "regular level update" and, therefore, would presumably have been presented as such and installed by the user.

Which leads me to believe that warmsummer is already running the newest files that Clem has placed in his distro's repositories. Would you know if there is a current PPA that has this file (and any newer versions of other files that might be required to satisfy its dependencies)? I remember using one back when Mint 14 was current several years ago, but do not know if it still exists or, if so, is current.

Regards,
MDM

Sorry, but I don't.

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

Upgrading xfsettingsd to version 4.12.1 has, I believe, improved the situation. The monitor does come back up, however, it comes back up in "mirror" mode. Also, the Xscreensaver allows the desktop to be completely visible, though it does require a password to unlock the system.

Update:

Turning off compositing under "Window Manager Tweaks" | Compositor in the control panel seems to have eliminated the issue with the Xscreensaver making the desktop visible, but it did not fix the issue with the monitors ending up in mirror mode after waking up.

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

Okay, so two issues:

  1. Xscreensaver allows the desktop to be completely visible - instead of turning off compositing, go to Xscreensaver settings, Advanced tab, and uncheck "Fade to Black when Blanking"
    .

  2. Monitors come up in mirror mode. This I believe is maybe this bug? As a workaround until the bug is fixed, you can add a hook into the resume event to reset the monitors using xrandr, but then you're back to a band-aid solution.
    .
However, there was a recent commit that looks like might have addressed this issue. Depending on how you installed 4.12.1 - if you can also apply this patch (it's currently the only addition to the 4.12 branch), you'd be able to test it to see if it addresses the issue.

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

1. I tried unchecking "Fade to Black when Blanking", however that does not correct the problem. The desktop still becomes visible with display compositing enabled.
2. When the monitors come up in mirror mode, the "Mirror displays" option is not selected when I look at the the Display options under the control panel which seems strange. The issue does sound similar to what was reported in the link you provided. I also tried applying the patch, but it did not fix the problem. The patch seems to be related to preserving the resolution. I am not sure if it tries to preserve the previous mode also.

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

1. Is there another screensaver running? Like lightdm? I thought Mint shipped with lightdm as the screensaver (I could be wrong). I had the same issue with the fading and unchecking that setting resolved it for me. My laptop was suspending so quickly that the fade action didn't complete before the suspend, but rather afterwards during the resume.

2. There has been alot if traffic in the bug tracker about displays, mirroring and deactivating/reactiving displays and the preservation of settings. Have a look through the list to see if any of the others match. If not, you may wish to create a new bug report for this issue.

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

1. I have light-locker disabled as a screensaver on the autostart apps. Lightdm is running, but that is the login manager as I understand it.

I believe the only screensaver running is Xscreensaver. Also, when I disable compositing the screensaver behaves correctly.

2. I will search through the list.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Dual Monitor Won't Wake from sleep

Sorry, I meant light-locker, not lightdm.
