whisker menu icon disappears

I have the whisker menu in my panel. Works fine. But, sometimes the icon is replaced by a black tile.

I can duplicate this at will by moving an application in the Window Buttons app. Deleting an running application is fine, but dragging to reorder causes the problem.

If I move the mouse pointer to the now black tile, it restores to the proper indicator.

Theme issue?

Re: whisker menu icon disappears

What version of xfce4-wiskermenu-plugin and xfce4-panel are you running? I remember a bug a while back with the same symptoms that got fixed. Looking for more info now.

Edit: Looks like this xfce4-panel bug that was fixed in 4.12.1.

I have 4.12.0. Guess I'll have to wait for my disto (Mint) to update this one of these days. Not a big enough issue for me to go and compile stuff for smile Or, is there an easier way to get a bit more current?

Re: whisker menu icon disappears

You're kind of bound by the distro you use and how current they are with Xfce releases or updates. Check to see if your version of Mint has released, or is planning to release 4.12.1.

If you can build 4.12.1 yourself, then go for it - it's only a bug fix difference between 4.12.0 and 4.12.1.

Re: whisker menu icon disappears

ToZ,

I know you're the resident Xfce guru and not the "all linux distros" guru (although that seems to be the case at times wink ), but do you know of a way to check to see what version a particular file is, for a specific distro/version? As an example... I also run Mint, so I got curious as to which version of xfce4-wiskermenu-plugin the newest (released) version of Mint, 18.3, uses. So I did a web search for

mint 18.3 repository

and found http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=Sylvia . I then did a CTRL-F and searched for that file in the list. However, according to that list, the version of that package is 1.7.3-0ppa1~xenial1. But you and MellowBob mentioned versions 4.12.0 and 4.12.1, so... <SCRATCHES HEAD> that can't be correct, can it? (1.7.etc, I mean.)

I did also find a file list for Mint 19, but it is still being developed and, therefore, the list is rather sparse at present (and does not contain that package).

Confused,
MDM

Re: whisker menu icon disappears

I got the version number I'm using right now:

   bob$ xfce4-panel --version
   xfce4-panel 4.12.0 (Xfce 4.12)

   Copyright (c) 2004-2011

I'm on the same dist as you are:

   bob$ cat /etc/issue
   Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia \n \l

Re: whisker menu icon disappears

Many of the core components support the "-V" or "--version" parameter to get you the version. On debian-based systems, you can also use the "apt-cache policy" command like:

apt-cache policy xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin

...to get it's version.

Not all of the Xfce components use the same versioning format, though. The core components are all 4.1x something, but the others, like whiskermenu, are something like 1.6 or 1.7.
