change date format in thunar from english to german

Hi,

i `m using thunar 1.6.12 under MX-17.1_x64, Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3.

My wish, because sometimes you can`t move an old tree like me, is to change the format of date.
Is there a way to see only 08.07.18 14:02?

The only choices thunar give me, are:

Today
Today at 14.03.38
Su 08 jul 2018 14:03:38 Cest   .... omg ;-)
2018-07-08 14:03.38

That is a point like reading, better not reading, an analog watch.
You just have a look and know the time without reading!

Thank you

Re: change date format in thunar from english to german

Unfortunately I don't know a way to do it (I think it's impossible without changing the code), but it looks like a good feature request to the Thunar's developers. You can submit a new Bugzilla feature / enhancement request here - link (there's a "File a new bug..." link on the bottom, you have to create an account there). That way the devs will see it.

So another option on that Date / Format list - "Custom format" - where users could entry their own desired formatting is probably what you want. From your example it would be something like this:

%d.%m.%y %H:%M

It could look similar to Clock panel item options:

Re: change date format in thunar from english to german

thank you.

Found meanwhile workaround for Nemo/Nautilus in changing locale, right in your way, but didn`t work.

% Appropriate date and time representation (%c)
%	"%a %d %b %Y %T %Z" ... (before changing)

% Appropriate date and time representation (%c)
%	"%d-%m-%Y %T"

Custom Format for system clock is in german style, so no help.

So i will ask Thunar developers ...

I'm a bit surprised to hear about this problem because we have many German and other European users and have never heard this from them. What is the output of

locale

Re: change date format in thunar from english to german

Thanks, locale OK.

You might think of posting this on the MX Forum as well, where there are some very knowledgeable active German users that might have some useful input.

Re: change date format in thunar from english to german

This choice already exists from the beginning and can not be changed.
As a user in the source code I have found no possibility to change it, maybe more of a developer. I have not written a bugreport, it's not really a mistake.
We german user got used to it, but I would also like in the other format.

Re: change date format in thunar from english to german

you are right, no mistake.
But a nice feature for german Vers. of MXLinux and german Vers. of Thunar.

Have a look at "english" Vers. of xfe, running on same "german" machine.  Date (%x %X) works:

Re: change date format in thunar from english to german

Ich verstehe nicht. What version of Thunar does that screenshot show?

thunar --version

In our Test Repo we have 1.6.15-1

Re: change date format in thunar from english to german

screenshot shows "english Vers. xfe" = X File Explorer Version 1.42, did not write Thunar

I took it as a sample for file explorer working on same machine with correct german date format.

Re: change date format in thunar from english to german

Update: Thunar developers did an awesome job and they added new date formats and even a custom format option. This feature/patch should be added to 1.8.2 release. More info here: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14527
