Switching Display Size - where is the system profile?

I have a laptop that has a 1920X1080 (16:9) resolution.  This is a bit high for me so I followed the instructions at the URL below to lower the resolution to 1600x900.  This works.  However, there is one side effect that is a problem.  I have desktop icons.  When I boot the laptop xubuntu first displays the icons in 1920X1080 mode then reads my .profile and resets the display to 1600x900.  When finished, all my desktop icons are on the left side of the display.

Edit:  Two users defined on this laptop.  If I log out from one and then into the other the display resolution is fine.  If I logout and return to my username all icons are left justified on the screen

My question is:  is there a system equivalent to ~/.profile that  I can change to force the 1600x900 at boot time?

I am using Xorg not Wayland

Re: Switching Display Size - where is the system profile?

It was my understanding that resolutions of LCD displays (found in laptops) could not actually be changed. If that is true, you're not actually changing the resolution, you're just causing everything to be enlarged a certain amount.

Can you, instead of messing with your display's resolution, instead increase the size of the things you see on it (fonts, icons, et cetera)?

switching between 1600x900 to 1920x1080 does change the actual icon side.

I believe you can add the settings directly into xorg configurations so that they take effect on X startup. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution.
