[SOLVED] - help for desktop icons please ...

I am French, I just registered on the forum and I do not speak English.
forgive me for my language that is derived from Google Translate.

I'm running on Xbuntu 18.04 and I'm trying to customize the XFCE desktop icons that is managed by Thunar.
The rest is managed by Caja that I find more suited to my needs.

Here's what I have under Thunar :

is there a simple way to manage the desktop with Caja or assign the icons to each folder or file?

Hello and welcome. Bonjour.

As of thunar 1.8.2 and tumbler 0.2.0, Thunar now supports custom icons for folders. See: https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/tumbl … or_folders. xfdesktop has not yet been updated to support the custom icons.

If caja is capable of managing the desktop, you should be able to kill the xfdesktop process and start caja in its place. Xfce is quite modular.

I'm not familiar at all with Caja. You can quit xfdesktop with:

xfdesktop -Q

...and then start caja.

Another way would be to create the file /usr/local/bin/xfdesktop and add the following:

#!/bin/bash
/command/to/start/caja

...and make the file executable. This will override the xfdesktop executable.

Here is another method using nautilus. Try replacing nautilus with the caja command.

Well here I have just tested and I find myself with an empty desktop all gray without wallpaper or icons at startup.

yet I managed a year or two ago with Emmabuntu that worked the same way but I had so much that I do not remember how I did!
If you have other ideas to customize the desktop icons on XFCE do not hesitate.

Bon voila je viens de tester et je me retrouve avec un Bureau vide tout gris sans fond d'écran ni icônes au démarrage.

pourtant j'avais réussis il y a un ou deux ans avec Emmabuntu qui fonctionnait de la même manière mais j'avais tellement bricolé que je ne me rappel plus comment j'ai fait !

Si vous avez d'autres idées pour personnaliser les icones de Bureau sur XFCE n'ésitez pas.

Installed caja and had a look. Do this:

After a fresh login, go to Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Session:

locate the xfdesktop entry and in the Restart column, click on the corresponding "Immediately" word and change it to "Never"
click on the "Save session"
go to the Application Autostart tab and create a new entry for caja with the following command:
```
caja --force-desktop
```

Log out and back in again.

Great it works, just a small modification to launch Caja without window must be put :

caja --no-default-window --force-desktop

It remains for me to find how to put the trash on the desktop, reduced the size of the icons and the space between the icons to have what I want.

An idea ?

I put the post resolved to 98% because it fails to settle some odds and ends :

1 - Adjust the space between the desktop icons.
2 - Show the Recycle Bin on the desktop.
3 -Reduce the font size on the desktop icons.

Génial ça marche, juste une petite modification pour lancer Caja sans fenêtre il faut mettre :

caja --no-default-window --force-desktop

Il ne me reste plus qu'a trouver comment mettre la corbeille sur le Bureau, reduire la taille des icones et l'espace entre les icones pour avoir ce que je souhaite.

Une idée ?

Je mets le Post résolu à 98% car il manque à régler quelques bricoles :

1 - Régler l'espace entre les icônes du Bureau.
2 - Afficher la Corbeille sur le Bureau.
3 -Réduire la taille de police sur les icônes du Bureau.
