Accounts not letting me sign in.

Hello!

I am having some trouble setting up accounts. I have just installed Arch on my computer and am attempting to get it working on my laptop.

When I set up my account I used this command:
useradd -m -G wheel -s /bin/bash hondamax

and then set the password with:
passwd hondamax

However, when I try to sign into this account, XFCE takes me back to the sign in screen as if I had not entered any information at all.

I have looked around on the internet and I cannot find anyone who has had similar problems than what I have.

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

Hello and welcome.

However, when I try to sign into this account, XFCE takes me back to the sign in screen as if I had not entered any information at all.

Are you using a display manager? If so, which one?

If you are logging in from a text console, how are your startx/xinit configuration files set up? What do your log files say? (Xorg log file, journal).

I am using the XDM display manager.

I have got access to the XDM log file:

There seem to be a lot of warnings but I do not know how to fix them.

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

Why are there wayland error messages? Are you somehow trying to start/run wayland? Xfce doesn't currently support wayland.

See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XDM. Following these instructions will get you a working xdm login.

1. What is the contents of your ~/.xsession file?

cat $HOME/.xsession

2. What is the result of:

ls -al $HOME | grep xsession

3. What is the result of:

systemctl status xdm

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

Im pretty sure the guide you sent was the one I followed. I just didn't think I would have another display manager installed.

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

The wayland entries appear to only be links to documentation. Ignore them.

On closer examination of your log file, there are two errors:

  1. "(EE) event8  - bcm5974: kernel bug: Touch jump detected and discarded." - you should probably report this bug or ask over at the Arch forums as this really isn't an Xfce issue. Looks like your touchpad may need some extra configuration. Search google for that error message to see some options for kernel parameters that can be tried.

  2. "xdm error (pid 2137): pam_authenticate failure: Authentication failure" - would indicate that the wrong password is being entered. Are you absolutely sure the password is correct? Maybe try it in a text console to confirm.

Edit: Also, what is in ~/.xsession-errors?

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

This log file says that Xfce did start and that you ran mousepad. Possibly from a previous login?

Can you log in through another vt (Ctrl+Alt+F3) and see if the username password combination works (no xdm). If you do get in, please delete :
- ~/.xsession-errors
- the contents of ~/.cache/sessions
...and check the permissions of the files in your $HOME:

ls -al $HOME

Then go back and try xdm again. If unsuccessful, post back the contents of:
- /var/log/Xorg.0.log
- ~/.xsession-errors
- /var/log/xdm.log

Thanks.

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

Can you explain again exactly what is happening? According to these log files, X starts, xdm starts, you log into Xfce, thunar and mousepad start. There is no indication of log out or crash or anything.

Also, can you tell us a little about your computer (make/model) and if you are connecting locally or through some remote method?

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

When I attempt to log in to my non-root account, instead of logging me in, the screen goes black for like a second, then returns me to the login screen prompting me to type in my username again. There are no errors like 'invalid password' or anything like that. It looks as if I did not type anything. No errors. If I attempt to log into the non-root account and I do get the password wrong, it gives me an error for that, so I know my password is not incorrect. When I attempt to login to the root account, everything works well, with no errors and it takes me to the main user page for root.

My computer is an old MacBook Pro from 2009 with a 15 inch screen. Its CPU is a "Intel Core2 Duo P8700 @ 2x 2.527GHz" and its video card is a "GeForce 9400M". The computer has 4GB of system memory and a screen resolution of 1440x900. I am accessing the laptop locally.

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

Ok, thanks, How many different user accounts did you try? If possible, can you create another account and test with it?

What is the results of "ls -al" when run it in the home directory of the user that does not work? Maybe your Xauthority/ICEauthority files have wrong permissions (though there should have been messages in the log files).

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

It appears the .xsession file cannot be accessed by anyone other than the owner which is root. Is that a problem?

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

No this is the root account. You need to run the same command in the home directory of the non-root user that doesn't work. So for example, if the non-working userid is "honda", then:

ls -al /home/honda

This is the output for that file:

[root@hondamax200 ~]# ls -al /home/hondamax100

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

Can you try creating /home/hondamax100/.xsession with the following content:

startxfce4

...and change the ownership to hondamax100:

chown hondamax100:hondamax100 /home/hondamax100/.xsession

...and change permissions:

chmod 0600 /home/hondamax100/.xsession

...and try again?

Edit: fixed missing parameter

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

Yes. These sets of commands ended up working for me. Thank you very much. You have been a big help in getting XFCE installed. However, do you know what the permissions should be set on the .xsession folder as it is currently readable, writable and executable to the owner and group. Is that good?

Re: Accounts not letting me sign in.

Sorry my bad. That last command should have been:

chmod 0600 /home/hondamax100/.xsession

...this will take care of the permissions.

If you are using xdm, then for every new user you create, you need to create a ~/.xsession file for that user, with the new user owning the file (chown) and the permissions set to 0600 (chmod).
