Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

Have just today compiled and installed the xfce 4.14pre1 and noticed that the compositor is causing some significant flickering with xfce4-panel (and also the log out dialog). Did some digging and it seems like the majority of the problems start after commit 8a5fc3b907. NB I have also tried the latest commit and the problem is still present. There is also slight flickering when moving windows that are on top of a full sized window (e.g. moving a firefox window around on top of a maximized xfce terminal).

I'm running opensuse leap 15.0 in a vmware virtual machine -- not sure if this might be causing the problem but it certainly has not been an issue with the last build I did in Feb this year.

Just wondering if this is a known issue or if anyone else has encountered it.

Re: Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

Hello and welcome.

Try forcing xpresent and/or glx as indicated in this thread. If that doesn't work, you may wish to open a bug report.

Re: Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

OK, I'll try that, thanks. Presume I'll have to recompile with xpresent support.. I don't think xpresent is in the opensuse repos by default so will have get around that. Will report back if I make any progress although I suspect I won't have time until next weekend now.

Yes changing to xpresent does seem to have done the trick. I would, however, still consider it a bug that the default option behaves so poorly. Do we think it's worth reporting?

Re: Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

It was changed to xpresent at one point in time and that caused  issues for some people so the default was changed back to glx. Feel free to create a bug report if you want - perhaps for the creation of a setting in the UI that allows you to easily switch between the options.

Re: Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

That would seem like the best way to go, if each option causes an issue for some users - make the setting a simple toggle.

Then, it's only really a problem for those (if any) for whom both options cause problems.

MDM

Re: Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

This is all fine, but what about users for whom glx doesn't work but don't have access to xpreset by default (eg, as far as I can tell, openSuse, Centos, Linux Mint, MX Linux etc)?

Re: Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

Doesn't the libxpresent1 package (on debian-based distros) meet this requirement? Might be a similar package name on Centos or opensuse.

As far as I can tell nothing matches *xpresent* on suse or centos.

Re: Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

I don't have any experience with either of those distros. Strange that it doesn't have that library available. Maybe you can follow up with the distro developers to see why it is not packaged?

Re: Xfwm Compositor Tearing in xfce4-panel

Yes I agree it's weird that they don't seem to include it. I will ask the opensuse devs if there's a reason for it.
