Re: missing settings control panels

Which distro are you using?
Which version of Xfce?

Post back the results of:

ls -l ~/.config/menus

Have you been using a menu editor to make changes? If so, which one?

The more information you can provide the easier it is for us to help.

Re: missing settings control panels

hi thanks. yes MenuLibre. I tried the other one but it wouldn't work. It asks for root pswd but doesn't start after that.

Re: missing settings control panels

mv ~/.config/menus/xfce-applications.menu ~/.config/menus/xfce-applications.menu.BAK

...and:

mv ~/.config/menus/applications-merged ~/.config/menus/applications-merged.bak

This will reset the menu system to its defaults. The menu editor probably messed something up.

Re: missing settings control panels

Is using MenuLibre causing this problem? The other editor won't launch.

Re: missing settings control panels

Possibly. Depends on how old it is. Personally, I find menu editors buggy and make changes manually.

Did my previous post restore the menu for you?

Which distro and version of Xfce are you using?
Which version of menulibre?

The other editor won't launch.

Which editor? What is the error message?

Re: missing settings control panels

XFCE4, Fedora 30
It's all a new install. I do have Gnome & KDE5 installed. I'm concerned about whether they might interfere. I had alot of problems with KDE5 so decided to try XFCE. Right now when I reboot it does not list an option to boot into XFCE at all in the login window. It was there but now it's gone.

Re: missing settings control panels

Did post #6 solve your menu display problem?

What is the "other" menu editor that you tried that crashed? What is the error message when you run it in a terminal window?

Re: missing settings control panels

It won't boot into XFCE at all now. Isn't listed at all in the login screen as a boot option.

Sorry I don't recall what other menu editor I tried. I think it was whatever XFCE uses by default. I downloaded MenuLibre because I couldn't get the other one to work. I'm having a terrible time getting my menu to stay organized in the way I put it. Getting things showing up I can't delete. Looks like a conflict with Plasma & Gnome menus.

Is there an "xfce.desktop" file in /usr/share/xsessions, or /usr/share/lightdm/sessions ?
Is there a /usr/bin/startxfce4 file?
Do you have an ~/.xsession file? If so, what is its contents?

Xfce doesn't have a menu editor. This is something your distro would have set - a 3rd party tool.

You don't seem to have Xfce installed.

Re: missing settings control panels

You're missing xfce4-session. It must have been accidentally uninstalled.

Re: missing settings control panels

Can I install that by itself or should I just uninstall then reinstall the entire desktop? Also any suggestions for menu editing? I'm having alot of problems with both KDE & Xfce with the menu. I shuffle things around & save & it just goes back to what it was. I was using MenuLibre but uninstalled it. Other app doesn't want to work. This is just incredibly frustrating. Endless little things that just suck my time trying to fix them. I thought Fedora & Plasma or Xfce would be more solid than Mint with Cinnamon but I'm still having endless bugs & glitches. How can anybody get their work done if they have to spend all their time swatting bugs in the OS?

You could just re-install the package, but if its missing maybe something else is as well. Maybe best to just re-install the whole desktop.

Also any suggestions for menu editing?

There are 2 apps that I am aware of: menulibre and alacarte, or the manual way (see: https://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu and https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=12235 (post #12 is a bit of a walk through). \

Other app doesn't want to work.

You've mentioned this a few times but never answered the questions asked.
- What is this other menu editor?
- what is the error message that you get?

This is just incredibly frustrating. Endless little things that just suck my time trying to fix them. If you are referring to editing the menu, then please understand that Xfce does not have an official menu editor and the suggested method is manual. If you are having issues with the menu editors then the issue is not with Xfce but with a third-party tool. Which probably doesn't help you much, but rather a point of clarification. It's also possible that there is an issue between using KDE and Xfce when manage menus - maybe they conflict. I don't use KDE so I can't comment further.

Perhaps you should just take one DE (either Xfce of KDE) for a spin without mixing them to see which is more to your liking - might rule out some of these annoying conflicts you are hitting.

Re: missing settings control panels

ok. I started with Gnome on Fedora 30 but really don't like the menu interface. I don't see any way to organize my apps at all. So I switched to KDE5 but lots of problems, now the icons don't show up at all. So I installed Xfce to see if it was any more stable. I like some of the KDE apps & the flexibility but seems like there is a major cost in terms of reliability & stability. I just don't understand why these are being released with so many bugs. It's like trying to build a house & having to spend all your time fixing your saws. How do I get something that just works over time & I don't have to continually mess with.

Anyway, I was using MenuLibre but uninstalled it & have been trying to use Menu Editor, it was either from Gnome or KDE. When I run it from the menu launcher I get a popup saying you are attempting to run Beesu which requires admin privileges, & asks for pswd; when I input it, the popup just  comes back.

(base)  $ beesu
Gtk-Message: 13:53:42.417: Failed to load module "appmenu-gtk-module"
(base)  $ sudo su
[sudo] password for jeffrey:
(base)   root # beesu
Warning: no commands. Nothing to do.
(base)   root #

dnf list "*menuedit*" returns both
gnome-menus.x86_64       3.32.0-1.fc30     @fedora
kmenuedit.x86_64             5.15.5-1.fc30     @updates

I think I'll just uninstall all Gnome, KDE & Xfce & reinstall KDE or Xfce. Seems like they ought to be isolated from eachother but aren't.
