Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

Well not solved, but I've found a work around. (I think, time will tell)

You mentioned you were using a git version, so I installed xfce4-notifyd-git from AUR.  I started the service and it was still running after 30 minutes.

I added the command to start the service to my startup applications and so far everything is working fine.

Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

Day 2 and notifications working great.  I'm satisfied with the workaround.

Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

For the record I'm on (X)Ubuntu 18.04 (original install: Ubuntu 12.04, added xfce-desktop and upgraded a few times...) and had the same issue: xfce4-notifyd doesn't start and programs that try to send notifications will hang for a few seconds.

This thread was very helpful and I solved it by adding a startup script to my user account using Xfce control panel with the command below:

    systemctl --user start xfce4-notifyd.service

It works but it still bugs me a little that it's a per-user solution.

If someone finds out the root cause of this issue or has more ideas on how to debug it (my journal entries say that the system tried to start the service but nothing happened afterwards), please come back and post here. I would like to fix my systemd globally without a reinstall.

Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

Do you have an xfce4-notifyd.service file in /usr/lib/systemd/user? It should start up the instance for every user that logs in.

What version of xfce4-notifyd are you running?

Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

Do you have an xfce4-notifyd.service file in /usr/lib/systemd/user?

Yes, it's there. Its contents seem to be standard too. The installed version is 0.4.2ubuntu2 (bionic). Once started for my user it stays running fine (no 10-minute problem at least).

The following command returns nothing:

journalctl -b --user -u dbus.service | grep notifyd

What else could I check?

I moved from lightdm to gdm3 in the last upgrade by the way (ubuntu 16.04 -> 18.04). Gdm3 behaved somewhat better (but I can't remember how exactly). Maybe that's related somehow?

Which means that it isn't auto-starting.

Can you revert to lightdm as a test?

Can you also post back, on a fresh boot (to keep the log file smaller):

journalctl -b --user

...let's see if there is anything in there that explains why it's not starting.

Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

Yes, I've just tried it and the behavior is the same (other than a bunch of weird things)

Can you also post back, on a fresh boot (to keep the log file smaller):

journalctl -b --user

Even on a fresh boot it's a 800+ lines file. Are you sure it's OK to post it all here?

I'll post the parts I think will be most useful and if it's not enough I'll post the rest later. Please tell me if I omitted something useful

The XF86Audio* lines may be related to some issues I had recently with my multimedia keys after the last upgrade... That's what gives me the feeling I need to reinstall everything (but I would love to understand what's going on).

mai 05 04:41:58 Octahedron systemd[2581]: Started XFCE notifications service.

So it is auto-starting. Can you please post the whole log file? There maybe something else there that is interesting.

Can we also see your xfce4-notifyd configuration settings?

xfconf-query -c xfce4-notifyd -lv

Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

It's starting because I added

systemctl --user start xfce4-notifyd.service

to my startup applications, that's my workaround in action. I'll disable that and post the results when I get home later today. I'll post my xfce4-notifyd settings too.

Thank you for your help!

EDIT: I've just found http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=12213 (a little bit late, I know). I have to try that solution and see if it works. I'm not well versed in systemd and dbus...

EDIT 2: In the end I opted to reinstall the whole system and didn't pursue this specific issue any further.

Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

Hi I've got a really similar problem as rayandrews and also the outputs of debuging commands give the same information.
I've found the problem in my case:

I've installed for testing reasons KDE. (Also on Archlinux) Even if I didn't use it, it spoiled the notification daemon startup.
In Archlinux the package plasma-workspace contains a servicefile: /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.kde.plasma.Notifications.service.
As mentioned here if both the XFCE4 notifyd service file and the KDE one are present it can lead the errors.
Especially that the XFCE4 notifyd do not autostart!
I de-installed  KDE packages (also moving the KDE org.kde.plasma.Notifications.service-file somewhere else helps)

Still I've got some questions: how is the autostart of the notifyd-service working how does dbus knows what to autostart? (or if one service is started why is it invoked)
Because maybe it is wanted to have 2 desktop environment installed (and normally one should not break the other)
Also I still don't understand the mechanism behind the start of whole XFCE4 as well, where is it written what to do when starting?

OT: many thx to this thread and in particular to ToZ - I do now understand much more of debugging these kind of issues and get known a lot of new tools

Re: XFCE notifications won't start automatically.

I can replicate the plasma file issue on my system. I created a bug report: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16690
