*Fingers crossed*
No effect at all.
And the mimeinfo.cache in /usr/share/applications is reverting back after a while without a reboot. It not only does not survive a reboot, it does not survive an hour. It's just not a viable fix...

I MAY have found the solution.
Terminal open:
sudo nano /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop
Scrolling through, found within:
MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;application/xml;application/rss+xml;application/rdf+xml;image/gif;image/jpeg;image/png;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handl$
I removed the unwanted associations, saved, exited.
Then rebooted.
Survived two reboots and two logout/in- Marking as solved... Hope it stays that way...
NOPE! Firefox is a Freaking Virus.

Keep in mind that when firefox is updated, it will overwrite that file. I think it's mentioned somewhere above, but if you copy that desktop file to ~/.local/share/applications and then edit this copied version to make the changes, it will supersede the file in /usr/share/applications when being processed.

Hmmm... copy firefox.desktop to ~/.local/share/applications?
Let me try that.
Toz was correct. It has served many reboots and more abuses, too.
