However, I recently came up on this thread (written by me, 5 years ago - and you answered) where I had the same issue, but on xscreensaver and using Arch:

Apparently I fixed it by going in tothe xscreensaver properties, on the Advanced tab, uncheck "Fade to Black when Blanking"
Other commenters indicate that it might be a DPMS issue.
I don't think this is the same problem exactly, but I thought I'd bring it to your attention.
