Program launcher how-to?

Have googled around, searched on Ubuntu forums, searched here for a bit...does anyone have a "How-to" for building program launchers? I'm somewhat familiar with how Linux works, but the program launcher baffles me and seems like documentation is sparse. Is it so simple there's been no need for some step-by-step directions? If someone could just tell me where to find the correct info to plug into each line I think I can get it.
