Xfce feature suggestions

You know the deal: People can never get enough.
Some features have been asked for since much earlier versions. Some of the cool new features of the latest release don't offer options to customize them as the users would want to yet. A few features even appear to have disappeared, and users miss them.

This is an attempt to make a list of all the features users would like to see implemented in the next release of our favourite desktop environment. So feel free to post your suggestions!
I will maintain the list in the opening post.

Feature suggestions:

· Option to enable/disable panel tooltips, ideally for each panel plugin individually

· Option to have a right click on the desktop (in 'file/launcher icons'-mode) make the traditional Xfce application menu appear directly, instead of the new desktop menu

· Option to hide application names in the task list (was available in 4.4 and prior, disappeared in 4.6)

· Feature to show different background images on each virtual desktop (has been asked for many, many times)

· Feature for the compositor to make panels/menus transparent, but not their text and icons.

Re: Xfce feature suggestions

Seems like an awfully niche request. I'd rather they just figure out how to make tooltips appear under/above the panel, rather than over the top of it.

Option to hide application names in the task list (was available in 4.4 and prior, disappeared in 4.6)

Remove the task list from your panel and replace it with the icon box. Only shortcoming here is the icon box doesn't play as nicely with compiz as the tasklist does.

Feature to show different background images on each virtual desktop (has been asked for many, many times)

Pretty sure this has been answered many, many times as well: it'd require a fair bit of effort to rework xfdesktop and would almost certainly make xfdesktop much heavier.

Feature for the compositor to make panels/menus transparent, but not their text and icons.

There's a cairo hack floating about which allows you to do just that.

Re: Xfce feature suggestions

Nice to have:
Make xfdesktop --reload switch backdrops from the list again.
This used to be the case in 4.4, no reason given why it shouldn't do in 4.6.

About time:
Panel workaround for new tooltips API so that they refresh immediately as they used to do in GTK+ 2.6.
Especially useful for network and cpu-load plugins.

Multiple selection of desktop icons has arrived - yet moving the entire selection remains to do.

Remembering the position of hotplugged volume icons is there - albeit on an individual level only.
Perhaps remember the last position for the entire device class.

Re: Xfce feature suggestions

The forum is not the place for feature requests. None of the devs is here anyway.
There is a wiki page that developers check regularly and there is a bugtracker.

I'm locking this topic
