mixer does not work for normal user

The problem is that the xfce4 mixer does not work for me as I'm logged in as regular user.
When being root everything is ok. It works. I can hear the sounds, the mixer shows the sound card I can adjust volume.
When I go back to normal user there is nothing in the mixer and there is no sound.
I have been looking for solution on the forum but there is no good answer.
The /dev/mixer is root:audio
the mixer config looks like:

<Mixer>
  <device name="default">
    <position x="0" y="8"/>
    <size width="600" height="235"/>
    <state sticky="0"/>
    <disclosure expanded="0"/>
  </device>
</Mixer>

despite the fact that I manually changed it by pointing out device

<device name="#0: Intel ICH6"/>

as it is in the root's config file
but it changes back to the original as soon as the user logs out/in

any hint, please

Are you in the group audio too?

I'd bet money on Herd being on the right track, here.
