[Solved] Can't change wallpapers

I just installed  xfce4-4.8.0 from source and have run into the problems below;

So I click on /settings/desktop/background and click one of the backgrounds in there and nothing happens.
When I start xfce4 there is no background showing on the desktop, it is just black.
I used the wiki for install instructions and installed everything it said to install from the fat file or whatever.

There is also no activity when I right click or middle click on the desktop with my mouse. No menus show.

So far this is what I have run into since the install.

Any help???

thanks

Re: [Solved] Can't change wallpapers

Is xfdesktop running?

ps -ef | grep xfdesktop

If not, Alt-F2 and start it up:

xfdesktop --desktop=:0.0

Re: [Solved] Can't change wallpapers

I don't have xfdesktop, I have xfdesktop-settings but I can't even find xfdesktop on my system. Which package is it supposed to be in?

Re: [Solved] Can't change wallpapers

Ok I found out that it didn't build using:
make DESTDIR=/usr/local/src/xfdesktop-4.8.0/build install

Everything else in the package built and installed except xfdesktop.
So I did a plain configure ; make ; make install   and it built and installed.

Anyway, problem solved except figuring out why DESTDIR didn't work properly.
