[Solved] Monitor suspends after 10 minutes

Hello everyone,

I am a newbie using Debian Squeeze with XFCE 4.6.2 on an old laptop.
My problem is that, after 10 minutes, on battery or on AC all the same, the monitor suspends without reason.
It is very strange because I have set everything on "Never" in the Xfce Power Manager as well as in the Screensaver Preferences. (XScreenSaver 5.11)

Do you have any idea of what I could do? Thanks in advance!

Eugene

Re: [Solved] Monitor suspends after 10 minutes

Thank you for your answer. I had a look at the man-page and eventually, I realized that the problem was caused not by DPMS (EnergyStar) but by the screensaver, set on 'blank' as a default setting. So I turned the screensaver off using xset s off.

Re: [Solved] Monitor suspends after 10 minutes

Hello again
I removed the "solved" mark because the settings I changed were not saved and I have to type xset s off after every reboot.
Other threads I found advice to put a small script in init.d, so that the command xset s off is run everytime X starts. But even if I'm a newbie, I get the impression that there should definitely be a more elegant solution, like modifying a configuration file or something like that... Any ideas?

You can type it into autostart.

Re: [Solved] Monitor suspends after 10 minutes

I would uninstall xscreensaver and use xset in a startup script, but I'm very much a newbie WRT Debian.

Thanks for your answers. Finally, I decided to add xset s off to the autostart (XFCE Menu > Settings > Session and Startup > Application Autostart).

Re: [Solved] Monitor suspends after 10 minutes

Hi Eugene,

I am puzzled.  I have no problem with this.  Why has it given you so much trouble ?

I have Debian Testing (xfce 4.8.3 with xscreensaver 5.15).  Starting with the Applications Menu, I select Settings/Xscreensaver.  On the Display Modes pane, I set the Mode to "Disable Screen Saver" instead of "Blank Screen Only" and on the Advanced pane I uncheck "Power Management Enabled" and the screen stays on all night - keeps me awake smile.  No need to go messing with xset and stuff.

Re: [Solved] Monitor suspends after 10 minutes

Well, I don't know what to say. I did the same at first, but it didn't work, and I had to double the already high amount of coffee that I drink every night between 1am and 4am... But as I am running Debian Squeeze (stable release), I am still using XFCE 4.6.2 with Xscreensaver 5.11, so maybe it was a bug that was corrected in the version you are using. (sorry for my bad English). Anyway, it gave the newbie that I am the opportunity of discovering the differences between the autostart of X, .profile and rc.local, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise.
