Synaptic Package Manager corrupted after installing xfce4 on Lubuntu

I am new to linux. My first installation was xubuntu 12.04 just a few weeks back, but I decided to try an upgrade because I was having trouble with some video drivers.

Now I just installed Lubuntu 13.10, followed by XFCE4 & XFCE4-goodies metapackages.

As soon as I log into a new XFCE4 session, I get an error message window:
          System program problem detected.
Do you want to report the problem now?

There is no option as far as I can tell to get a description of precisely what the problem is - the only choices are of reporting now or closing the window without reporting.

When I try to launch Synaptic from the Applications drop down menu, I click on Synaptic and nothing happens. No authentication request window appears.
I am able to launch Synaptic from a terminal window, however. But when I close the Synaptic GUI after it has run, messages like the following appear in the terminal:

~$ gksudo synaptic

(synaptic:2751): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x1218530 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x1230140 is not mapped

(synaptic:2751): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x1218530 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x125f780 is not mapped

(synaptic:2751): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x1218530 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x12a0120 is not mapped

(synaptic:2751): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x1218530 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x12a0260 is not mapped

(synaptic:2751): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x1218530 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x12a0620 is not mapped

(it goes on for many more lines not reproduced here)

This behaviour is actually an improvement. A few days back, I installed the same lubuntu followed by xfce4 and xubuntu-desktop.
With that combination, I similarly could not launch Synaptic from the drop down menu in the xubuntu or xfce4 sessions, although I could initially run Synaptic successfully from the lubuntu sessions. (Eventually, though, even in the lubuntu sessions Synaptic stopped functioning.)
I was able to launch the Synaptic GUI from a terminal in xfce4 or xubuntu-desktop, but no authentication window would appear, and Synaptic would fail to complete operations. The error message I was getting then was something like 'Software can't be installed or removed because the authentication service is not available', which I am no longer getting.

Not sure whether it helps but, looking from an xfce4 session,

My /etc/apt/sources.list.d folder is empty.

My /etc/apt/sources.list file contains the following:

There is no option as far as I can tell to get a description of precisely what the problem is - the only choices are of reporting now or closing the window without reporting.

Don't know about synaptic, but with respect to the crash reports, if you follow through with reporting the crash, in the next screen two or two before submitting the report, you'll have the option to view the details about the crash. Or, have a look in the /var/crash directory for a log file of the crash.

Or, have a look in the /var/crash directory for a log file of the crash.

The crashes seem to have stopped. Not sure why.
Incidentally, there was never an option to view in the pop-up window any details when reporting the crash -- if I clicked Report Now, the window immediately closed. If I clicked Cancel (or whatever the other option was), the window immediately closed. So either way, the same things happened, at least as far as I could see on the desktop.

It seems I can now launch Synaptic by running

gksudo synaptic

in the terminal. The Synaptic GUI then appears, and I am able to install or remove software that can then be run in either the xfce session or a lubuntu session.

However, I am still having the problem with the error messages being generated in the terminal when I close the Synaptic GUI, that say, for instance

(synaptic:2751): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x1218530 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x12a0260 is not mapped

If I then enter ^C in the terminal BEFORE closing the Synaptic GUI and then close the Synaptic GUI, I don't see any of the "the visible child is not mapped" error messages. But I don't know what is going on behind the scenes, and whether entering ^C first and then closing the Synaptic GUI might just be hiding some important problems that I don't see.

Where would be the best place to ask for help on this issue?

Re: Synaptic Package Manager corrupted after installing xfce4 on Lubuntu

The other issue I am still having is that I can't launch Synaptic from the Applications drop-down menu when I am running xfce session.
There is a Synaptic link, but when I click it, nothing happens.

Why is that? How can I fix it?
If this isn't the place to ask, where would be a better place?

Re: Synaptic Package Manager corrupted after installing xfce4 on Lubuntu

Is Synaptic Package Manager the only app that you are unable to launch from your XFCE install's application window?

Re: Synaptic Package Manager corrupted after installing xfce4 on Lubuntu

I know it's been a while but just as a reference point, Synaptic was messed up in the latest upgrade.  I downloaded from the Live CD (Download package only option) and copied it to my home directory.
Then I used dpkg -i to install.  Works great.
