Weather Panel App

Just started 01/03 through current date, weather panel app suddenly shows 'no data' and a message that it has left the panel, execute or cancel, only execute removes the non-responding panel item and I have to place it back in panel but cannot immediately so I usually wait an hour or two and try again. Item returns and works for hours at best never works for days/weeks like it used to. This is a recent occurrence as stated and the weather app on this PC is not critical but it's crashing is annoying.

Re: Weather Panel App

Which distro, version of Xfce, and version of weather plugin are you using?

Re: Weather Panel App

My distro is Debian Wheezy 7.3, Xfce is 4.8.0.3 and weather plugin is 0.74-4. I see that version is ancient and have downloaded 0.8.3.
Today I timed how long the app ran before crashing, 4 hrs, from 12:30pm - 4:30pm. Would not run even after a restart. Now I'll time long how it takes before I can get the app to run in panel.

No. Its hard-coded.

EDIT: A while back when we were having issues with the weather applet and the the weather network changing their feed access, I threw together a script to parse the weather info from the weather.yahoo.com rss feed (mine=http://weather.yahooapis.com/forecastrss?w=4363&u=c) and tied it with the genmon applet to display it. If the Yahoo weather feed is more accurate, I can post the script and images files. Here are some screenshots:

Can you please share the whole thing. My xfce4-weather-plugin constantly crashes. I'd really want to return the weather forecast in my panel.

Thanks!

Re: Weather Panel App

Just got updated to 0.7.4.5, let's see if the update stops the applet from crashing.

Re: Weather Panel App

Toz: The images from your script look nice. I bet a lot of folks will be interested.

OP: Some time ago, I saw a thread on using the GNOME weather applet in XFCE. Was either here or at the Mint website. That might be an option for you.

My favorite weather app is now 1Weather. But as I got it from the Google Play Store for my phone, it probably only runs on the Android flavor of linux. Shame, really - it's pretty good.

MDM

Re: Weather Panel App

Oops, sorry, somehow missed this thread's updates. Here is the tar.gz file.

You need to change four values in the "get_weather" script file:
- UNIT ('f' for fahrenheit or 'c' for celcius)
- WOEID (your city code from weather.yahoo.com)
- SCRIPT_LOCATION (the location where this script is)
- IMAGE_LOCATION (the icon theme you want to use - there are 3: images, samgrey, blue)

You need xfce4-genmon, wget and bc installed.

Add genmon to your panel, and set:
- Command: /path/to/get_weather genmon (e.g. /home/toz/bin/weather/get_weather genmon)
- Label: unchecked
- Period: 1800
