Icons missing in systray (skype and others)

Hi all.

I am using Xubuntu 14.04/64bit and the bundled XFCE4, V 4.11.0. on two machines (both: AMD Phenom II x 6 T1100, GigaByte 8700 mobo, 16GiB, NVidia GeForce 9500 GT, NVidia driver 304.117).

After the upgrade from 13.10 (where eveything worked fine) I found that certain icons are missing from the systray (notification area).

- skype
- network manager

which is not good, because especially for skype I cannot see the current message state, this way.

I have tried clearing the list of known apps, have re-installed skype, have checked the skype config.xml, restarted the panel.
No messages in logs...

Now I am a bit out of my wits.

Is there anyone having an idea on what to try next? Any place to look further?
Or is it a real bug?

Thanks for your help, folks.

Nick

"Uhmm...", he muttered, "yes, ... but ...". He fell silent for a moment and concluded: "No."

Re: Icons missing in systray (skype and others)

Same problem with a number of icons.  Clementine is the current pain point.

Re: Icons missing in systray (skype and others)

Just discovered that I was expecting Clementine to show up in the notification area but I needed to add the indicator applet and it then showed up there.

Re: Icons missing in systray (skype and others)

Regarding missing skype icon, from http://www.webupd8.org/2014/04/10-thing … buntu.html:

3.3 Fix missing Skype tray icon / appindicator on Ubuntu 64bit
On 64bit, the required package to get a Skype tray / appindicator icon is not installed automatically. To fix this, use the following command:

sudo apt-get install sni-qt:i386

The Skype tray icon might disappear after you log in, but it should show up after a few seconds.

I don't use skype so I can't verify this.

Re: Icons missing in systray (skype and others)

I am encountering the same issue, and installing sni-qt:i386 did not solve it.
My analysis so far is that it is not specific to a particular application, but rather to a class of application, name those using QT. For me affected applications are at least: skype, mumble, owncloud and spotify. Pidgin and Jitsi for instance work well.

It seems that only very few people are affected, as it is quite difficult to find other threads with the same issue. Anyone with suggestions to get debug output or possible solutions is welcome smile

If I find the time I will try to setup a clean xubuntu environment and see how it behaves. It all is fine I will probably reset my session settings and see if it helps. But I would rather avoid it, if possible.

Re: Icons missing in systray (skype and others)

Awesome, I confirm that killing indicator-application-service works for me as well!

Thanks a lot. I removed the service from the autostart list (Preferences -> Session and startup -> tab "Automatic startup"), hopefully this will make the solution permanent.

Re: Icons missing in systray (skype and others)

Thank you for your advice about killing indicator-application-service. It works!
But I decide to solve that problem, so I just uninstalled "indicator application" from synaptic and now everything works after system loads!
Regards.
