Invoke "Select an Icon" dialog without invoking exo-desktop-item-edit?

Hello,
XFCE has a very handy utility to preview (and select) icons by their generic names.
It comes up in "create new launcher" => "select icon".
I like to use it simply to preview icons and get their generic names. for that i use

exo-desktop-icon-edit dummy.desktop

But,
is it possible to invoke the Icon Previewer by itself?

I believe you mean:

exo-desktop-item-edit dummy.desktop

I don't think you can go directly to the icon previewer, but you can use Thunar or Ristretto to view the icons directly from the icon theme's file hierarchy (e.g. /usr/share/icons/<ICON_THEME>).

yes, that was some kind of typo.

of course i can look at the icons as image files in my filemanager.

but the icon previewer is incredibly useful to find icons by their generic names (like "gksu" instead of "/usr/share/icons/Faenza/apps/48/gksu.png") so that i can use them somewhere, and they are persistent when changing icon themes.

True, but the generic name will always be the first part of the actual filename. The different folders are simply different sizes/filetypes to be used in different areas of the DE as per the freedesktop icon spec.
