Xfce display manager show wrong display modes

Hi there,

I've been looking on the net for my problem, but i couldn't find something up to date to resolve my problem.

I have an HP-mini, with Xubuntu installed, everything run fine, but there is a little problem with the display modes...

In the display manager there is a lot of display mode with a refresh rate of 120Hz ( the default 1024*600 is only 60hz wich is good, but all of the others mode set by default my screen to 120Hz when i switch to another mode ), but my laptop screen don't support this rate.

Is there a way to remove a display mode in the display manager, or remove a refresh rate for all the resolution ?

When i use xrandr, there is no mode with 120Hz... Can i tell the display manager to copy the settings from xrandr ?

Edit : When i switch to for ex. : 640*480 120Hz, the screen is like cutted in half vertically, and when i xrandr is this mode the * of the actual refresh rate is near 60Hz...

Hello and welcome.

While not logged in, rename the ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml file. It will be re-created on the next log in and hopefully get the correct xrandr modes.

Can also post back the exact results of the "xrandr" command?

Re: Xfce display manager show wrong display modes

Thanks for your help ToZ smile

So, i've logged out my Xfce session, Crtl-Alt-F1 to switch to console mode, renamed displays.xml, rebooted, logged in, and crossed my finger.

When xfce started, the file displays.xml wasn't here.

I've launched the Xfce display manager, the file displays.xml is born again, but the 120Hz modes are still here.

Here is the xrandr output :

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 600, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS-0 connected 1024x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 223mm x 125mm
   1024x600      60.02*+
   960x600       60.00
   960x540       59.99
   800x600       60.00    60.32    56.25
   840x525       60.01    59.88
   800x512       60.17
   700x525       59.98
   640x512       60.02

   640x480       60.00    59.94

   400x300       60.32    56.34
   320x240       60.05

For information, i have a HP mini200-4210sf, with an intel GMA3600 graphic card, i remember that it's a nightmare to find a driver using the hardware acceleration, i was happy when i've seen Xfce running videos ( in firefox ) with the hardware acceleration, actuelly it almost work like it has to do, and i didn't go to deep in the video driver subject. So maybe it's a video card issue

Re: Xfce display manager show wrong display modes

Which version of Xfce are you using?

Can you post back the contents of your Xorg.0.log file?

Effectively we can see strange modes after 46s... it seem to have something to do with the doublescan attribute...
I know a little about programming but concerning the kernel i'm a bit confused smile

Re: Xfce display manager show wrong display modes

Xfce is just using the resolutions and refresh rates that are being exposed by X. As you can see by your Xorg log file, and you've rightly identified, doublescan seems to be causing these errant refresh rates. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can help you with that.

One other question: I notice you are using the modesetting driver in X. Is this by choice? Which video card(s) do you have and have you tried using the proprietary drivers?

Re: Xfce display manager show wrong display modes

as toz already mentioned your x server will use your edid informations, however you can disable this feature and add manual modelines/preferredmodes to your xorg.conf(there is a tool called "cvt" that will help you to find the correct modelines)

One other question: I notice you are using the modesetting driver in X. Is this by choice? Which video card(s) do you have and have you tried using the proprietary drivers?

As i said some post above, i have a GMA 3600, and at the period where i installed linuxon that PC, the only way to have a basic hardware accelaration was to use modesetting like describe here : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_GMA3600?html maybe actually there is a descend proprietary driver... But it's not my everyday PC, so i didn't give me headaches with this, actually my system handle a video hardware acceleration and a simple OpenGL support, wich is quite enough for me to develop small application and learn more about programming.

however you can disable this feature and add manual modelines/preferredmodes to your xorg.conf(there is a tool called "cvt" that will help you to find the correct modelines)

Yes i know that smile, but it's a pain to create this file... it's a long time problem, it's not very annoying, if  i know i'll use low resolution fullscreen, i switch to this mode before launching app. If i have the time and the patience to make it i will... for now, i stay with that.

Thanks for your answers wink

and the problem will persist, since its the fault of your Display Vendor that included a faulty EDID table to your monitor, also you should be happy that you can change it easily by editing the xorg config because on some other operating systems you have to live with it.

Effectively it's not a big problem, and i've found this Hp-mini in a trash, so i didn't ask him to much.

What OS did you think about ?

Re: Xfce display manager show wrong display modes

Hi

I'm coming here with a similar issue, so I'm posting here instead of opening another thread. i hope that's fine.

Xfce4.10 ran perfectly fine when I freshly installed it a few hours ago on my dual monitor setup. Then I added a third monitor, thing went still smooth. But when I turned of my other monitors things went haywire.

With some fiddling I got the correct pictures back to my two desktop monitors at their respective resolutions w/o mirroring or anything.

However I'm now getting a lot of screen tearing on my primary monitor. I've tried deinstalling and reinstalling Xfce, which did not reset any of my settings nor the monitor issue. Adding .xprofile to my home directory didn't help either. In fact, this line

xrandr --output DVI-D-0 --mode 1920x1200 --rate 60

Does nothing, while I'm sure that the issue is that my primary monitor's refresh rate is not set correctly.

At the very least, what I can do to properly deinstall Xfce so I can reset whatever wrong configuration has shown up here? Since it was working fine before...

Thanks in advance!

edit: Oh yeah, I'm running Debian 8 and used Gnome before installing xfce. Everything works as intended when I switch back to gnome so I'm sure this has to be fixable somehow!

Re: Xfce display manager show wrong display modes

I'm not an expert but after seeking some sites on the net, i think the best way to you to obtain a result is to create a static conf using Xorg.conf.

I'm not quite sure but you can create one like described here : http://askubuntu.com/questions/4662/whe … e-x-there/

And configure it like described here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution/

Good luck wink

Re: Xfce display manager show wrong display modes

Thanks! I guess that's the optimal solution, but I managed to get it working well enough with compton.
