problems with Evolution then couldn't log into Ubuntu forums

Hello everybody.
You've helped me before with XFCE desktop recovery.
This time, I was running Evolution in XFCE.

Evolution Problem

In brief: Evolution holds emails that are not displayed, but are logged as unread.

History:
It lost my email password.
Re-entering it didn't seem to work (which causes confusion.... which password etc.)
For some reason or other, it later began to work.

I downloaded my mail.... but some were missing (I'd checked the web server previously but not opened any messages).
My Evolution Inbox indicated more unread mail than was present.

I opened all the visible mail to be left with 16 unread in the inbox, set to show All Messages.
I tried different 'show' settings.

I downloaded two more emails.... neither displayed, though the unread number ticked up to 18.

Checked my server today.... some ebay messages and some junk, plus an XFCE and Ubuntu password mails (which I opened on the server).
Downloaded all to Evolution.

I received the ebay and junk!!!!!, but not the password mails (they've gone from the server)...... I now have 22 unread emails that are not displaying.

Very strange that some emails display, while others do not.

I updated the O/S (clicked the update link) and rebooted.

I have just sent a test email from gmail, and clicked receive all.
It downloaded 2 emails..... neither can be seen...... but they show as unread.

Does anybody know what the problem is?

------------------------------------------------

While Evolution was running under XFCE.... I didn't think it was an XFCE problem..... so I tried to log into Ubuntu Forums.
Clicked the SSO log in..... taking me to Ubuntu one log in screen.
It didn't work.
Lost the password reset email to the problem above.
Repeated it today, and reset the password.
I am logged into my Ubuntu One account but....
Logging in to Ubuntu now takes me to Forbidden you don't have permission to access /login.php on this server.

This is the same for both linux and windows boxes.
------------------------------------------------

That's it.
I'm here again, hoping that you can help me.

Re: problems with Evolution then couldn't log into Ubuntu forums

I can't see how Xfce could be involved here at all.

Since the two lost emails and the login all involved passwords, my guess would be there is a problem with Evolution or the Gnome keyring--the latter being the most common item appearing on the first page of a web search on "evolution password problem."

MX-23 (based on Debian Stable) with our flagship Xfce 4.18.

That error message you're getting is caused by a permissions issue at their end.  Nothing you can do until they correct it.

Re: problems with Evolution then couldn't log into Ubuntu forums

Thanks for the responses.
Let me just repeat.... I never thought that this was an XFCE problem..... I was, and am merely looking for help.

It's a fairly difficult situation, because not only is it unstable - I get some emails, but not others.... and I log into SSO and it logs me into my ubuntu one account.... but then I'm forbidden to progress.

This makes it difficult to report the issue.
I also can't simply download my emails.

I've just tried logging into Ubuntu forums again, and still denied access.

In the meantime, I'm going to log into my email server, and mod the handling of emails.

I may also try to create a new account.
I think that I need to be pro-active.

Thanks again for the responses

Re: problems with Evolution then couldn't log into Ubuntu forums

Oh..... something new!

I changed Evolution to 'leave the mail on the server'...... then I downloaded the mail.

Again.... so many visible, and correctly sorted.
I checked the new junk.... fine.

And then I clicked 'Inbox'.

Ah ha.................. I saw all my unread mail momentarily.
It all appeared in bold text as per normal........ and then it disappeared.

That's good news...... it is all definitely there.
Now I just need to access it and find out what is causing this problem.

Perhaps the ubuntu log in problem is entirely unrelated.

Try using Thunderbird (or any email application other than Evolution). Do this even if you really, really wish to continue using Evolution. Why? Because this will help you determine whether the issue is with your email application (Evolution) or elsewhere in the chain. Additionally, it is possible (but not necessarily likely) that even - if you see the same issues with the other email application - you might find that the errors / logs report about those issues in a different way, which could potentially provide you with more information.

Regards,
MDM

Re: problems with Evolution then couldn't log into Ubuntu forums

Ah....... so If I load Thunderbird....... it should see all my mail as if it was Evolution?

That's a very interesting option.
Thanks for that suggestion.
I'll have a go at that

Re: problems with Evolution then couldn't log into Ubuntu forums

Thanks again MDM...... We make progress.
That 'different approach' that you mentioned...
Well... it paid dividends.

In the original password screw up..... that was probably temporary...... in the confusion.... I must have removed the security element.
When I launched Thunderbird, it picked up on this immediately, and flagged it up.

This is really looking like another of those XFCE forum victories big_smile
Well; let's not count our chickens..... but I reckon that this avenue of enquiry has legs wink

The simple fact is that Thunderbird provided additional user guidance.
So perhaps we can look at this security issue, and crack it.
Then maybe deal with the hidden messages afterwards.

Email Security

I have, too long, been blinded by the mundane availability of email..... once setup, forgotten.

POP access:
connection ssl/tls
Authentification: Normal password.

I think that I probed it..... but now when I look at edit.... there is no probe option.
Anyway.... it works.
I think that is fine

SMTP Posting:
connection ssl/tls
Authentification: none

I tried 'normal password' & encrypted..... but connection to my ISP supplied smtp server failed.
Hence authentification = none.

Analysis of the state of affairs

POP: I understand fully that I need a password to get my emails, and evidently this is best sent in encrypted format.
SMTP: I send mail from me 'under my email persona' encrypted, but without a password.

So my email supplier, doesn't require a password that verifys who I am..... it just sends my mail without confirming that I actually own that name (address).

Does this mean that anybody can send an email, like as if it has come from me (my address)?

How do they know it is 'me' sending the email, if it is not verified?

...and thereafter
What then, is the default server, that is provided as an option.
Is this the Thunderbird encrypted option?

Can anybody open the curtains for me, and let a bit of light in...... I appear to have stayed too long (decades sad ) avoiding these questions.

Re: problems with Evolution then couldn't log into Ubuntu forums

Well I couldn't find anything that helped with the smtp, other than an article that effectively said SMTP was crap, and we are stuck with it.
http://www.tcpipguide.com/free/t_SMTPSecurityIssues.htm

So, moving on top the missing mail.
I figured that I would 'import everything'.

However, there is a bug in Thunderbird, that means that import doesn't work.
You get to a screen saying choose which prog to import from..... but nothing displays.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=432902

This makes Thunderbird a bit useless, because if I started to use it, I would have all my stuff on Evolution.

But... maybe there is another email package that can import mail.
