Screenshot of how XFCE Greybird theme displays icons on the desktop

This is how the Greybird theme displays icons on the desktop of Xubuntu 16.04.

greybirdscreenshot.jpg

The video card is a Nvidia GT 620 and I am using the Nouveau Gallium 0.4 driver which in Linux is superior to Nvidia drivers.
The monitor is a 22" LG high definition LCD and otherwise everything is rendered beautifully.

The number of XFCE themes were reduced in the 16.04 software package. I would choose another theme except some of the elements end up to be black on black, like the clock on the toolbar. (XFCE panel) and I don't know how to modify the colors.

Tried by creating a /home/ineuw/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk-css file, to change the tooltip ballon colors for Firefox, but it doesn't work. Am sure
that I am missing something on how to modify and correct my issues.

@define-color tooltip_bg_color #C6F6D1;
@define-color tooltip_fg_color #000000;

@define-color theme_tooltip_bg_color @tooltip_bg_color;
@define-color theme_tooltip_fg_color @tooltip_fg_color;

The icons on my Xubuntu 16.04 install look nothing like that. Yours appear blurry and seem to be missing the background colour to them. Do you have anything in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 that might be affecting the display of icons on the desktop?

If you choose the Numix theme, does this problem persist? It sounds like you've got some other gtk configs lying around that may be affecting your system. Try creating another account on your computer and logging in with that account to see if it suffers from the same issues.

Re: Screenshot of how XFCE Greybird theme displays icons on the desktop

Hi Toz,

I did have an additional admin account (for unforeseen emergencies, although it's a single user desktop) and Greybird is the selected theme and it has the same fuzziness. Removed .gtkrc-2.0 folder altogether but this doesn't help.

Can I make a complete duplicate set of a theme and modify certain aspects of it. I like Numix except the menu bar in Firefox is black on black. Or, in Xubuntu 14.04 I was using Bluebird. Is this available for 16.04?

Thanks

It should be a file called exactly ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and it should be in your home folder. After you rename it (or remove it) you need to change your theme or log out and back in again. If the file does exist, can you post back its contents? I'm curious.

On my system, I don't see this at all. The numix theme works quite well.

You can get it from https://github.com/shimmerproject/Bluebird. Click the "Clone or Download" button, download the zip file and copy its contents to ~/.themes. It looks like it works okay.

Unless this is some sort of graphics issue that you are running in to, it really seems like you have an errant gtkrc file somewhere. Since its affecting both your profile and the other one, maybe the changes are elsewhere. What files do you have in your /etc/gtk-2.0 and /etc/gtk-3.0 folders?

Also, what are the contents of your ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini and ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css files?

        The Numix color issue is a Firefox problem, I will post another bug report in mozilla.bugzilla. My Numix.

Don't run autogen,sh, you don't have to. Just select "Bluebird-master" in Appearance Settings to have it take effect.

I rebooted and also expected it in Appearance Settings but it's not there. There is only, Adwaita, Greybird, High Contrast, Numix, Numix daily and Raleigh.

Re: Screenshot of how XFCE Greybird theme displays icons on the desktop

Can you post back:

ls -l ~/.themes

You should have a "Bluebird-master" folder there. Something like:

toz3@xubi:~$ ls ~/.themes
Bluebird-master
toz3@xubi:~$
toz3@xubi:~$
toz3@xubi:~$
toz3@xubi:~$
toz3@xubi:~$ ls ~/.themes/Bluebird-master/
autogen.sh    gtk-2.0  LICENSE.CC   Makefile.am  README.md
configure.ac  gtk-3.0  LICENSE.GPL  metacity-1   xfwm4
toz3@xubi:~$

Re: Screenshot of how XFCE Greybird theme displays icons on the desktop

Thanks for the time you devoted to this issue but I don't wish to waste more of your time any longer. I found so many bugs in Xubuntu 16.04 that my frustration is endless. No choice but give up on Linux for awhile. At its present state it is far worse that Windows 7.

All of those files should be in a "Bluebird" folder - not individually like that . This is why its not being recognized.

Not sure I agree, but more important is that you have a tool that works for you. Don't give up on Linux - you just had a bad install/setup. Run a Linux distro in a VM in Windows and keep working at it. It will pay off.

My thanks again. It works and I got the Bluebird theme. Now, where can I download additional simple themes?:-)

Let me add to that, "themes that work with the version of GTK3 that I have installed". Recently, newer versions of GTK3 always break existing themes because they keep changing the API, so you have to make an extra effort to get a theme that works with the version of GTK3 that you have. Xubuntu 16.04 uses GTK 3.18. So here are some links to themes that should work with this version of GTK3:

- Arc
Create an ~/.themes/Arc folder, download the zip file, and extract the contents of the common folder in ~/.themes/Arc.
- Paper
Create an ~/.themes/Paper folder, download the zip file, and extract the contents of the Paper folder in ~/.themes/Paper.
- Vertex
Create an ~/.themes/Vertex folder, download the zip file, and extract the contents of the common folder in ~/.themes/Vertex.
- El Capitan
Download this file and extract it into ~/.themes

Just make sure you get the right files in the right folders. Each theme should have its own container folder, and inside that folder you should have a "theme.index" file plus at least the "gtk-2.0", "gtk-3.x" (where x should be a number, preferably 18), "xfwm4" (if it includes a Window Manager theme), "xfce4-notifyd" (if it includes a notification theme) folders. The last two are optional. If they don't exist, you'll have to mix and match and use other xfwm4 and xfce4-notifyd themes.
