How to install xfce4.12 on Ubuntu14.04?

Do aptitude install xfce4 && aptitude install xfce4-goodies
I get:
icons error

What is it ?? Where are the icons and stuff?

When installing aptitude install xubuntu-desktop -> everything is fine. But does not arrange a large size 1.2gb
And the most important thing is that virtualbox is not working! Here writes:

Qt WARNING: QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 10263, resource id: 8396165, major code: 40 (TranslateCoords), minor code: 0
Qt WARNING: QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 10576, resource id: 8395967, major code: 40 (TranslateCoords), minor code: 0
Qt WARNING: QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 15473, resource id: 8397654, major code: 40 (TranslateCoords), minor code: 0

So how to install yet xfce4.12 on Ubuntu14.04? So that everything works!!

Regarding the missing icons, make sure you have the gnome-icon-theme package is installed. If it is installed, make sure you've selected an icon theme in Settings Manager > Appearance.

As for the virtualbox error, it doesn't look like an Xfce error but rather a QT error. How did you install virtualbox?

Of course do not have gnome-icon-theme. on the ubuntu-server-amd64 it does not go in the package smile thx. I'll try.

VirtualBOX put -

wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.1.24/virtualbox-5.1_5.1.24-117012~Ubuntu~trusty_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i virtualbox-5.1_5.1.24-117012~Ubuntu~trusty_amd64.deb
sudo aptitude install -f

p.s. The fact is that on LXDE with it there are no problem

On the same computer, same install?

It's never a good idea to force an install as you are bypassing potential issues or missing dependencies. What error messages do you get if you don't force (-f) the install?

also make sure you remove those local gtkconfiges(~/.gtkrc) that your lxde-config-tool has created otherwise they might break some other GTK-based desktop environments.

thats not force, it tries to fix your system by trying to install missing dependencies or by removing packages that have broken and unavailable dependencies.

Ahhh, my bad. Assumed it meant force.

To the @OP, what are the results of that command then? Does it complete successfully or does it display some other message?

Also are you running this locally or through something like vnc?

Yes, installation from the beginning

virtualdub ask the package libsdl1.2debian

also make sure you remove those local gtkconfiges(~/.gtkrc) that your lxde-config-tool has created otherwise they might break some other GTK-based desktop environments

I do not put on top of LXDE! I gave an example. Because it works

1.download ubuntu 14.04.5-server-amd64
2.install ubuntu
3.update/upgrade
4.install xfce
5.reboot
6.After reboot xfce is not started automatically. so echo startxfce4 >~/.xsession
7.reboot
8.after booting start xfce auto!! ок
9.install virtual-box
and not working as it should

Is there a problem with "xfwm4"? Because lxde uses an "openbox manager"

I suspect you are missing a display manager. Xubuntu uses lightdm. Try installing that.

Try running tasksel (as root). Toward the bottom, select "Xubuntu desktop". That may install packages you missed earlier (including some packages you don't want).

Re: How to install xfce4.12 on Ubuntu14.04?

I would recommend installing Xubuntu as a whole by typing in this command "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" That's way better than downloading Xfce 4.12 and xfce-goodies.

That would be my suggestion, too - a fresh distro install, one that uses the desktop environment  (natively) that you're looking for. Kind of a "one step solution."

Unless, that is, this is a shared setup and the other user(s) cannot stand Xfce. A spouse, for example; it can be less stressful to tear one's own hair out than to experience the wife doing it wink . So, in such a case, I would look for a distro that offers the multiple DEs that you and the other user(s) require already pre-installed.

MDM
