Checking file hashes - [Solved]

Hi guys,

I noticed that on some files the file properties dialog has a fourth tab, Digests, which gives the file hashes and has a Check function. I've looked around, but haven't seen an explanation of how to use this. I also don't know what the HMAC button does.

This is all very simple, I'm sure, but I would appreciate a little direction on it.

I think you are referring to GtkHash whish isn't an Xfce component but rather a third-party tool. It looks like the documentation is a little sparse though. Here is what wikipedia says about HMACs.

Ok, thanks. That explains a bit what HMAC is, but I still am not clear on how to use this tab. Poking around, though, I have found that simply pasting the correct MD5 into the left box produces a checkmark after it if it is correct. So that's basically the functionality I was looking for. The box also seems to have seed power as well, because when I hit Hash with the box populated, the file's hash changes, and stays changed until I close and reopen the Properties dialog.

But if I'm correct about that checkmark, which I hadn't noticed before, that's really what I was looking to understand. I had downloaded libreoffice via torrent and wanted to make sure it was legit. Keeping it simple here.

Wouldn't that equate to simply opening a terminal window in your download directory and typing

md5sum filename

? Or, if you rely on a different file integrity checksum, using its command?
