Alt-drag to move a window got "stuck"

This weekend, while performing with my Ubuntu Studio laptop, I had to reset the music system because the window manager got "stuck" alt-dragging a window -- trying to do anything in the window simply continued to move the window.

I'm wondering if there is some setting to prevent this.

It occurs only with the ThinkPad's touchpad -- in fact, it's happening right now as I write this. I believe the sequence was:

1. Built-in keyboard and touchpad: Alt-drag, release. (At this point, with an external keyboard and mouse, "move-window" is over, but...)

2. Now all drag operations in that window move the window instead of doing what they are supposed to do. Also the top bar seems to be disabled during this time.

It seems that I can clear it by clicking in the window and then hitting alt by itself -- but, when I'm on stage, I don't want to have to worry about a window getting into a weird state and requiring multiple steps to repair.

Any ideas?
