[Solved] Facing screen tearing in xfce4.14pre

I'm on Arch Linux. Using xfwm4-git from AUR.

I have been using xfwm4-git from a long time now. when it was on 4.13, I did not face this issue.

Re: [Solved] Facing screen tearing in xfce4.14pre

There have been a number of changes to the xfwm4 git vblank code. Assuming that you have re-installed xfwm4-git (to get the latest codebase) you can set which vblank mode to use. For testing, use the parameter "--vblank=" with each of the following options:

  • --vblank=xpresent

  • --vblank=glx

  • --vblank=off

I believe glx is the current default (at one point, xpresent was but there were issues around setting that as default). You can make it permanent via the xfconf setting "vblank_mode".

You can make it permanent via:

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/vblank_mode -s xpresent

That way there is no need to specify a parameter.

Is it some kind of fix for screen tearing in XFCE 4.14+ ?
I'm currently using KDE mainly because of this issue. I didn't even have to install the Nvidia propriety driver and there is literally no screen tearing in KDE. I'm wondering why is it still the problem in XFCE. I'd love to go back to XFCE and this is the main problem on my way back.

I'm writing this post from live usb of Xubuntu 19.04 hoping the issue is solved... but it's not sad

What version of xfwm4 is included in Xubuntu 19.04? Perhaps its not recent enough. The changes have been pretty recent to the development 4.13 branch.

From my experience with a Geforce 8600GT, nouveau is quite troublesome probably because it sub-utilizes the card. I'm with 4.14pre2 in Fedora and it works ok with the proprietary driver. I've installed the driver recently so haven't evaluated too much but with nouveau, in more intensive actions like with tumbler generating thumbnails windows could become unresponsive.

Most noticeable is smooth scrolling in Firefox.
