Thunar right-click length

I'm on Thunar 1.8.11 and when I right-click a file, the length of the menu that pops up is short and I have to use the arrows at the top and bottom of the context menu to see the options.
Is there a way to lengthen the context menu so I don't have to scroll?

Re: Thunar right-click length

There was a change in gtk3 that broke context menus. Thunar was patched and this was included in version 1.8.10. (more info on the bug report).

Since you are still experiencing the issue...
- which gtk3 version are you running?
- and which GTK (Appearance) theme are you using?
- Does changing the appearance theme (or setting it to Adwaita) fix the issue?

Re: Thunar right-click length

GTK3 version:
$ dpkg -s libgtk-3-0|grep '^Version'
Version: 3.24.5-1.1MX19

Appearence theme = Graybird-mx

At the time, changing the theme didn't seem to make a difference.

But now I'm having the opposite problem! When I right mouse click, I get the full list of context menu options. If a file doesn't have enough options to fill the context menu, it just puts a blank space. Looks a little weird, but at least I don't have to use the up and down arrows in the menu.
Not sure what happened. Maybe a system update resolved it?

And...it's back. I have to scroll the context menu again.

Is it still present with the Adwaita theme?

Also:

GTK3 version:
$ dpkg -s libgtk-3-0|grep '^Version'
Version: 3.24.5-1.1MX19

...is this a distro-patched version of GTK3?

Re: Thunar right-click length

I don't know if it's a distro-patched version.
Happens with Adwaita too.

Re: Thunar right-click length

The bug was fixed in thunar as of version 1.8.10, but at that time, the version of gtk3 was greater than the version that comes with the distro you are running.

Which version of MxLinux are you running. I can take a closer look.

Re: Thunar right-click length

Thanks for all the help with this.
I'm using MX Linux 19.1 AHS from here: https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/iso-download-mirrors/

Re: Thunar right-click length

Here is what I've found. I'm only able to replicate this issue on MXLinux with gtk3 version 3.24.5, and only if with the Adwaita theme. If I move to another theme, eg. greybird-mx, I can see extra space for the first right click but it fixes itself for the next right-click.

On Archlinux with gtk3 version 3.24.14, I don't have any such problem.

The gtk bug report indicates that 3.24.5 works fine. I'm wondering if the fix in Thunar has a negative side effect for versions of gtk3 3.24.5 or less? Perhaps you could open a bug report against thunar to indicate this and see what the developer says?

Edit: I wonder if any debian buster users are seeing the same?

Re: Thunar right-click length

Or maybe I can ask the MX Linux guys if they could update gtk3 in their repos to 3.24.14?

I think that's a bit of a stretch. They are based on debian stable, are they not? Or see if they've got a newer version of gtk3 somewhere in testing that you can try.

Are other MXLinux users complaining about the same issue?

Re: Thunar right-click length

I don't know if other MX Linux users are having the same problem. I can ask in the FB group.
And I think I understand about asking to update that library - it might break the whole concept of the "stable" release.
It appears the Thunar folks are aware of this issue and were annoyed with people posting "me too" reports of the problem.
I may have to just wait unless you have any other recommendations. It's just an annoyance versus a high impact problem that I think I can live with for a bit.

Re: Thunar right-click length

Yep, others are having the same problem. Someone posted a css workaround but it didn't work for me.

Re: Thunar right-click length

You could try to create a bug report, but I think the use case might be too small to commit work effort to. Are you able to install a newer version of gtk3, maybe through some sort of testing repository, to see if it resolves the issue? I'm not too familiar with MXLinux.

Re: Thunar right-click length

One of the MX Linux Developers posted this but I'm not sure how to implement it nor roll back if there's a problem with it. Besides, he says it's not completely addressed.
"I have rebuilt our GTK-3.0 3.24.5 with some relevant changes pulled from 3.24.7. It improves the Thunar right-click menu issue quite a lot although it's still not quite perfect."

Re: Thunar right-click length

I also have that problem. It even happens with the panel when switching themes. Sometimes when switching themes the right-click menu become extremely short (vertically). The only solution I found was to restart the panel. In the case of thunar however, the problem remains sticky forever.
