logname: No login name

Hi,

I'm on XUbuntu 18.04 and it seems that logname is not quite happy with the installation. It keeps answering that there is no login name. It seems to work OK when I ssh -t into my machine.

Maybe this is something to fix completely from XFCE in the next release. Until then, I'm not going to be able to use XFCE in many installations...

Best, /PA

Re: logname: No login name

Could you please check your ownership of .Xauthority?
in Terminal, also try

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

Re: logname: No login name

There was a change in the vte library a while ago that caused this. It affected many terminals including xfce4-terminal, gnome-terminal, lxterminal. I believe this was the bug report for the issue. It has sine been fixed and logname works again but xubuntu 18.04 must still be using a version of the vte library in which it is broken.

As a temporary workaround, you could use:

who -m | awk '{print $1;}'

...and maybe even alias it to "logname" so you can still continue to use the same command.
