Can't run Nemo

I've been using Nemo as my filer and suddenly have problems with it. The main menu <favorites> has a <file manager> option ... when I select that I get my main nemo screen after about a 30 second delay. Doing ALT-F2 or typing "nemo" from a terminal also brings up the program after a long delay.  The <Places> panel program does nothing.

From a terminal, nemo --version responds right away with 4.4.2.

I am assuming that nemo is trying to do something before displaying ... no idea what.

Thoughts?
