Thunar performance hit after GTK3 migration

I noticed that thunar suffered a bit after it was updated to use GTK3. Because I use Porteus distro and it's really easy to swap between different DEs without changing absolutely no single file system I could test it in a very consistent way, and here are the results:

Thunar 1.6.18 (GTK 2.24.32):
(first instance after boot)
guest@porteus:~$ time -p thunar
real 0.14
user 0.00
sys 0.01

(second instance after boot)
guest@porteus:~$ time -p thunar
real 0.04
user 0.00
sys 0.00

Thunar 1.8.15 (GTK 3.24.23):
(first instance after boot)
guest@porteus:~$ time -p thunar
real 0.21
user 0.02
sys 0.01

(second instance after boot)
guest@porteus:~$ time -p thunar
real 0.05
user 0.00
sys 0.00

And it's not just the time for it to open, but also the rendering time that is also slower in the new version. I wonder if there's anything we can do to have the same performance of the old version back.
