4.16 no icons in xfce-panel application menu

Hi,
I don't have any icons in the xfce-panel application menu.
Of course ''Show icons in menu" is switched on, and several icon themes are installed.
Toggling back and forth 'Show icons in menu", switching between different themes, regeneration of icon caches, reinstallation of packages (panel, themes, xfdesktop) did have no effect.

Where else should I look for troubleshooting, what else should I try?

Hello and welcome.

What version of Xfce are you running?
If 4.12 or earlier, is there anything in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 that might be preventing it (like gtk-button-images = 0)?
If 4.14 or later, is there anything in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini that might be preventing it?

I'm running 4.16 (as mentioned in the topic), ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini is not present.

I'm getting the same thing in new installs of devuan chimaera (= debian bullseye). I haven't tracked down the exact cause, but removing desktop-base brings the menu icons back. I'll have to look at this some more, since I am the maintainer of desktop-base in devuan.

I just loaded the iso into a vm to look. It doesn't look like the default xml file is being properly appiled. Running the following command:

xfconf-query -c xsettings -p /Gtk/MenuImages -t bool -s true --create

...will bring them back.

But the issue is that the default xsettings.xml file is not being applied on a new user set up.

Edit: it looks like you are using the debian alternatives method to select the correct xsettings file. The default one, xfce4-xsettings.devuan-deepsea.xml seems to contain empty elements (the cinnabar one contains correct settings).

Thanks! Fixing the file corrects the problem. I'll rebuild the package.
