How to force Orage installation in XCFE 4.16

Hi!

Until recently,
I had the Orage agenda which worked well under Debian Testing / XFCE 4.16
unfortunately I had to reinstall my Debian system
and I can't install the "orage" package anymore.

Do you know a trick to override these restriction?

Thank you.

PS: I know how to pin a package with APT, that's not the difficulty.

Debian + XFCE since ... GNOME 3 wink

You can install the package with gdebi, downloaded from here :

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/ma … -6_all.deb

Re: How to force Orage installation in XCFE 4.16

Hello,

I join the discussion. Sorry but to make orage work, not only the "data" file has to be installed, also the "runnable" part (orage_4.12.1-6_amd64.deb) but when in Debian 11 (bullseye) and try to install, messages are:

# dpkg -i orage_4.12.1-6_amd64.deb
Selecting previously unselected package orage.
(Reading database ... 1159738 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack orage_4.12.1-6_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking orage (4.12.1-6) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of orage:
 orage depends on xfce4-panel (<< 4.13); however:
Version of xfce4-panel on system is 4.16.2-1.

dpkg: error processing package orage (--install):

Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils (0.26-1) ...
Processing triggers for mailcap (3.69) ...

From the Debian bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=977628

with the upcoming release of Xfce 4.16, some libraries have dropped
their GTK-2 variant, which breaks unported software like for example
Orage, which is also unmaintained.

So, in order to make it work on Debian 11, orage should be ported to GTK-3 and then include the new packages in Debian 11.

Regards,
Josep
