Delaying update to Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS; will I lose xfce desktop?

Hi!

I've been deliberately dragging my feet on updating to Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS because of the native wayland implementation. I've been keeping up with the blog posts and updates with xfce desktop but I notice that it isn't 'ready yet'.

If I pull the trigger and update to 22.04.1 (Kernel 5.15+) from 22.04.5 (5.4.0-125), will I have the option to install a different desktop, or will I have to install a new desktop in some kind recovery mode?

I really like the low overhead of xfce, and I understand the team has decided to not support xwayland (which is the right choice), but I want to avoid a huge headache updating to the latest kernel.

Hello and welcome.

Questions about upgrading between distro versions should probably be directed to the forums of the distro - in this case ubuntuforums. You may get more relevant advice from there.

From an Xfce perspective, it will work with any kernel version and currently just with X11.

Assuming you meant you were upgrading from 20.04 to 22.04, the biggest difference that you will notice with Xfce is that it will now be based on GTK3 (instead of GTK2). It might be helpful to boot up the 22.04 CD and/or run it in a VM to get a feel for it, as there are some significant differences between GTK2 and GTK3.

Most of the problems that arise from big upgrades like this are related to your computer's hardware and graphics subsystem - something that happens before Xfce is started.

Debian 12 Bookworm would be roughly equivalent to 22.04 Ubuntu. It is kernel 5.19, gtk3 XFCE4.16 and working smoothly for me for the most part.
11 Bullseye is current stable, and upgrades fine.
