Screen freezes (Debian)

Hey ive got a Gebook 140, 14" - intel celeron N4020 / 4GB RAM. Running dual boot (win).

My screen freeze when i try to change scale of my resolution ( 1366x768 ) bigger.
It also freeze when my screen goes in screensaver or standby/close my notebook.

But it not freeze when i dimm my brightness to zero/black screen.

Those freezes shows up at a white screen with green vertical bars.

Its really a shame i always got to turn my device off if i just want to get it on standby for a while.

Anyone got an idea what to do here?

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

Can we see log messages from when the screen freezes?

Either ~/.xsession-errors (or ~/.xsession-errors.old if you have re-logged in), /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or possibly from your journal:

journalctl --user -b 1 --no-pager

I cant find the xsessions error logs

I can find the Xorg.0.log and journal from terminal

When is the right time to copy the logs, after the restart when it frozen?

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

If you can grab output from when the freeze happens that would be most helpful. You can tail both, have them running in the background in terminal windows, then when the freeze happens see if anything is logged:

tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log

...and:

journalctl --user

Alternatively, post back Xorg.0.log.old after a restart of X after a hang, or the results of:

journalctl --user -b 1 --no-pager

...to see last boot's user journal (assuming there was hang during the last boot).

When my screen freezes i cant see anything else but the white screen with green vertical bars, so poorly i cant see whats happening in my terminals. I only can hard reboot my notebook.

But here is the Xorg.0.log.old from last session when it crashes after i put the energy option "black screen after 1 minute". So it went black and when i want to wake it up i got the freeze.

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

Nothing there about video. Can you post back the output of:

lspci -vnk | grep -A12 VGA

...and:

journalctl --user -b 1 --no-pager

So i reproduced the freeze again, restarted and copyed this terminal output:

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

It is difficult to troubleshoot this issue without any related error messages, but it does sound like a video issue (as opposed to an Xfce issue). Are you using the intel driver?

apt policy xserver-xorg-video-intel

If so, try removing that package (this driver hasn't been updated in a while and the kernel built-in modesetting driver is now preferred) and rebooting. The modesetting driver will kick in.

So i removed the intel driver package, rebooted and still get freezes.

I noticed i still have i965 va driver - video acceleration api - driver for intel g45 & hd graphics package installed. Should i also remove it?

And i got the xserver-xorg-video intel graphics driver for intel i8xx, i9xx installed

"apt policy xserver-xorg-video-intel" Output:

xserver-xorg-video-intel:

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

The output indicates that xserver-xorg-video-intel is still installed. Can you uninstall that package and reboot?

Output:

xserver-xorg-video-intel:
  Installed:           (none)
  Installkandidate: 2:2.99.917+git20210115-1
  Versionstabelle:
     2:2.99.917+git20210115-1 500
        500 http://ftp.uni-kl.de/debian bookworm/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So i uninstalled it, rebooted and tryed it again, poorly it still freezing the screen.

But i guess i removed the wrong stuff at the beginning, i went to synaptic and uninstalled the "intel drivers" and "i965 va driver - video acceleration api - driver for intel g45 & hd graphics" packages.

Should i install them back ? If yes, i dont know how.

I have spoken.

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

You can re-install them. Just go back to synaptic, select them and choose the install option.

After its up and running again, try disabling the compositor (Settings Manager > Window Manager > Compositor) and see if the same freeze happens again.

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

I'm sorry but I'm out of ideas. My gut tells me its a video problem, but there doesn't appear any clues to say why.

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

That is the clue we were looking for and it indeed is an bug with the video driver. Found this similar debian bug - seems a fix is coming in kernel version 6.1.45.

Re: Screen freezes (Debian)

Thats my output

cat /proc/version
Linux version 6.1.0-11-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc-12 (Debian 12.2.0-14) 12.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.40) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.38-4 (2023-08-08)

Trying to figure out what that all means.
I got 6.1.0-11 and 6.1.38-4 and 12.x bookwork kernel version?

Do they got any terminations about kernel updates?

Jesse Rhodes wrote:

I discovered this commit by bisecting between 6.1.0-7 (6.1.20-2) and
6.1.0-8 (6.1.25-1), and confirmed that the current 6.1.0-10 (6.1.38-2) does not
have the issue if intel_display.c is rolled back to its previous state.

So he says, the previous version 6.1.0-10 (6.1.38-2) does not have this issue. Is it worth to downgrade the kernel?
