[Solved] xfwm4 problem...

Hi all

Running 4.8 on aptosid (debian sid)
xfce loads (I see the desktop) but no window decoration, the panel is all wrong, cannot alt-tab etc.

Running xfwm4 from console gives me:

# xfwm4 --display=:0.0 --replace
(xfwm4:18742): xfwm4-CRITICAL **: Xfconf could not be initialized

(xfwm4:18742): xfwm4-WARNING **: Missing data from default files

Can anybody help?
My xfce is unusable sad

Re: [Solved] xfwm4 problem...

Do you have xfconf installed and is the path to the service file known by dbus (see files in /etc/dbus-1/session.d/)?

Re: [Solved] xfwm4 problem...

Hi all and thanks for the answers

Last thing I did before all hell broke loose, was editing my xfce menu configuration (disabled some items in the "Ohter" menu). So, I have managed to use the desktop by creating a new user and logged in using default configuration.

then I went back to my normal user and

mv ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf.old

After that I was able to load xfce successfully

Now all I have to do is recreate my old panel configuration and re-input my old keyboard shortcuts

Re: [Solved] xfwm4 problem...

Here I am again...

I keep having problems with xfconf -had the same "failure" right after an update

I have checked /etc/dbus-1/session.d/ (as Nick proposed) but there's no file there, either when the problem is present or when it's not.

I tend to believe though, that this problem has nothing to do with updating packages or any of the sort. It seems it has to do with my panel or something (I have a somewhat heavily customized panel)

Whenever the problem occurs it seems the only way to fix it is make xfce 4.8 believe it's the first time it runs and it asks me what to do: have an empty panel, have the default panel or integrate the old one.

Any suggestion is appreciated

Re: [Solved] xfwm4 problem...

I think I finally figured it out!!!

After playing around (moving and renaming all those hidden directories in my home folder) I ended up to ~/.cache/sessions/. A couple of xfce4* files existed in there, and after deleting them, I finally managed to successfully load xfce

I will play (and test) the next couple of days in order to verify that this was the problem, and (hopefully) close this thread

Re: [Solved] xfwm4 problem...

Hi, i just had this error again on my Debian Laptop. I am running Debian testing witch xfce 4.8 on it. It worked gread, but suddenly i had this problem. A combination about removing the config dir an wiping the cache dir helped in my case. Do you need additional informations for fixing this? I keept the config dir if you want to take a look at it.

Thanks and greetings
Leo
