My distro is Gentoo Linux. I've successfully installed Xfce on a laptop, but am unable to reboot/shutdown from Xfce. I can only log out and issue halt/reboot commands at a terminal or in slim.
Originally, the reboot and shutdown buttons were active, but I was asked for my root password when I clicked on them, following which Xfce said "you can't do it anyway".
I followed this guide:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-85 … ight-.html
After I did so, I found the reboot and shutdown buttons greyed out.
Since these forums are just Xfce and not Gentoo, I'm not sure what to post to start troubleshooting, so I'll post whatever I'm asked to. :-)

I've dropped the files below in /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/ and added myself to the power group.

That works perfectly, thanks!

This even makes the suspend and hibernate buttons appear, and since I've already configured my kernel for these functions, they work. :-)
