In Gnome I an run gnome-about. I do not see anyhing similar in XFCE. Based on my inspection of the packages shown in synaptic it is apparent I am running XFCE 4.6. Just wondering if there is an easier way?
TIA,
Ken

Hi, try running xfce4-about.

Thanks Ailurus, that did the trick. I had tried xfce-about but left out the 4. Looking at the packages available in Synaptic I see that I will have to get used to referring to xfce as xfce4. Ken

xfce4-about shows only the 'major' Xfce version, since we make individual release for each package, you can have different micro releases for different Xfce packages (xfce4-panel-4.8.5 with libxfce4ui-4.8.2). Most program has a -V or --version argument to display this.

Thanks Nick. I was in fact trying to determine just the major version. I found some enhancements described on the "Tour" of xfce on xfce.org. They did not seem to work and I was trying to figure out if I had version 4.8 (which I did not and which is why the enhancements were not present.) Ken

Interesting. I use Fedora 14 and would have sworn that installing XFCE from the Fedora repos would give me the latest version, but it's only 4.6. I'll have to ask about this at fedoraforum.org.

Version 4.8 was first introduced in Fedora 15, so to get those packages you'd either have to upgrade or somehow enable F15 repositories

I was told on fedorafourm.org that there's a third-party repo that has it. I tried using it on my laptop but keep getting told that 80 packages are blocked by repository protections. I've turned off the protections for that repo but it still happens. Maybe somebody over there will know what's going on. Thanx anyway.
