I would like to easily turn off the screen saver like we can do with the inhibition applet in Gnome. This is needed to watch movies in peace. Is there something similar in XFCE? I tried to use the xfce Gnome adapter applet but it does not work. The applet says that the Gnome power manager is not available. What is the alternative?

Bind shortcut keys to commands that disable/enable your screensaver... Or write a script that does that automatically when whatever player you're using is running.
(It's not needed with VLC or smplayer here, the screensaver is disabled automatically. Flash videos cause this problem however.)

I was not able to find the information for doing that. I decided to add more time for my settings. Yes, Flash was the problem. I'll set things manually when I'll need it. It is not so bad.

Xfce doesn't have a screensaver of its own (at least not to my knowledge), so your distribution is probably using xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver or simply the screensaving feature of Xorg.
You can check the man page of your screensaver to see if there's a way to disable it, or simply kill it with something like "pkill xscreensaver" and then restart it later. If it's the Xorg screensaver, then "xset" is the command that can enable or disable it.

The xfce settings has preferences for power management and screen savers. Do you mean these are only preferences to the actual implementation offered by my distribution?

Hm, I have not installed Xfce's power manager but it most probably uses the same API as xset to control DPMS.
When I select "Screensaver" in Xfce settings I get Xscreensaver's preferences window.

I guess I can do a "xset dpms 0 0 0" to put everything off before a presentation. This seems to be the best solution.
