[Solved] Permanent unwanted session restoration in XFCE 4.10

Hello

We are many users of Xubuntu Trusty 14.04 equipped with XFCE 4.10 experiencing problems with xfce4-session-logout, after clicking on "restart" option nothing occurs.
But when using "Shut down" button it automatically saves sessions data in ~/.cache/sessions/ even the "restore session" case is unchecked.
Every restarts will lead to the session restoration.
When launching manually xfce4-session-logout in a terminal, no error messages available.

Some tests have been made and a provisional solution has been found :

- Erasing content of ~/.cache/sessions/ folder, (no luck)
- Saving a blank session just after a freshly opened session (no luck)

Then someone had the idea to set rights on this folder as read only, it works fine, but when restarting the computer using "restart" button, it crash returning to the opening session requesting password. Unluckily this solution is middle void due to it.

Thank you very much to inform us about a possible update or known fix.

I also run Xubuntu 14.04 on one of my systems and I don't experience this behaviour.

How are you shutting down? Are you:
a. using the Log Out option from within the new Whisker Menu
b. using the Actions Plugin
c. using the log out entry from the old Applications menu plugin
d. manually running xfce4-session-logout from the command line?

There is in existing thread here about this issue.

Can you try this:
- Settings Manager >> Session and startup >> Sessions tab >> "Clear saved sessions"
- Leave a few windows/applictions open.
- Click on the log out button, make sure "Save sessions for future logins" is unchecked, and shut down.
- Start up the computer and login.
Do the applications re-appear?

If so, try this:
- Shutdown the computer
- Boot up but do not log in, instead go to the first tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and run:

cd .cache
rm -rf sessions

- Go back to the gui (Ctrl+Alt+F7) and log in
- Leave a few windows/applictions open.
- Click on the log out button, make sure "Save sessions for future logins" is unchecked, and shut down.
- Start up the computer and login.
Do the applications re-appear?

And if the applications still autostart, please post back the contents of your ~/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log.gz log file. Its compressed. so to view it, you'll need to:

zcat ~/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log.1.gz

Yes until now it works by your second solution, removing completely the sessions folder.

I will watch it a while for unexpected reactions, and i will keep you informed in case the problem would occurs again.
Anyway i will come back soon to give some news about it.

Here something alike is happening.
My icons often move in very nice Linux Lite 2 and the system frequently wants to
send error-reports after boot.

It still be a problem, i could identify the 30seconds timed shutdown button to cause the problems.
It works fine following your method until the time i am shutting down the computer by the other way with that button, then everything restart in bad ways

Thanks for the link, yoritomo.
But I'm not good enough in these listings to make the right conclusions.

I don't know if it is relevant, but I did try to make a remaster of Linux Lite.
And it appeared that a late version of the program wouldn't do the trick and it reported,
that Lightdm was not correct configured. I didn't do anything...
No problem, I used an earlier version of Remastersys.
But the report about Lightdm looks important to me.
I think that part of the bootproces might be very buggy and of course that
could have an effect on the desktop.
Maybe it is what is saved at shutting down the pc which disturbes the process.

For me it would have been better if they had waited until this version of Xfce was okay
in this respect.

Back in my first reply post, I listed 4 ways that you can shut down. Which of the methods works, and which one causes problems?

ToZ: i was trying all these options , and this is the result

Condition of the tests, i prepared the machine to be in condition of normal boot, by deleted the sessions folder as you described above.

a. no problems
b. cause of the problem (if you mean this shutdown http://pix.toile-libre.org/?img=1407546883.png)
c. no problems
d. no problems

After if failed by the B option, none of the options works normally anymore, until i reset it deleting the sessions folder again.

Looks like this bug. Sounds like its best to avoid using the Actions plugin until its fixed.

You CAN use the action buttons plugin (to logout without saving the session), but in another way:
Use just the "logout..." option as an action-button (not as a session menu) and NOT the "logout" option.
(At least I think they are called that way, for me in German it's "abmelden..." vs. "abmelden")

Then, a modal window will appear with different option (logout, standby, reboot, shutdown..) AND an "save the session" checkbox.
(For me, this has also the advantage of not displaying my username and wasting precious pixels on my netbook panel...)
