usb A to 3.5 mm adapters don't work with analog microphones

Using Xubuntu 22.04 on a desktop and Xubuntu 24.04 on a laptop.  I have 3 different usb A to 3.5mm jack adapters.  They all work as outputs, but none of them work properly with analog (3.5 mm) microphones as input.  According to the specifications, they are supposed to work with linux and all are capable of working as input devices as well as output.  Both computers recognize all the devices, but one of them doesn't work at all ie.  the volume indicator does not move at all even when the mike is struck.  (Although the indicators shoots up to the maximum when the mike is plugged into the device, and then goes down to close to zero and stays there.)  The other two work but the volume has to be turned up to the maximum (153%) but even then the mike capture is too weak to be useful.  Both 22.04 and 24.04 are completely updated, and the microphone works properly when plugged directly into the desktop computer.  Is this a problem with xfce4?  Any ideas on how this can be fixed?

Most likely not. Xfce doesn't manage the sound system.

Any ideas on how this can be fixed?

Maybe posting to a pulseaudio (or pipewire if you are using it) support board might help.
