One more question. I have a custom icon for vlc player in ~/.icons/themename/scalable/status/vlc.svg and ~/.icons/themename/scalable/status/vlc-xmas.svg and on Xubuntu 14.04 it worked well. But on 16.04 it doesn't work anymore. XFCE still recognizes vlc.svg but not for the notification area and not for the windows buttons. Am I missing something again? How to fix it?

thats normal, xfce panel does not respect custom launcher icons, however you can use dockbarx instead of the windowbuttons plugin

Has something changed? As I mentioned before, I had custom vlc icon on xfce panel about six months on 14.04.

maybe they shipped it with dockbarx? or they patched it for thir release? I never could use custom taskbar icons in xfce so i dont think they changed something.
