I'm using Manjaro and Arch and i have the same problem in both.
When i go to settings/appeareance and change the tab it takes a long time to be changed (for example from style to icons or fonts).
Be noted that this delay only occurs the first time.
Sometimes when I'm in a hurry it's a bit annoying.
Not a big problem of course, but I would be grateful if there was a solution.

Its most likely an issue in your GTK2 theme. It probably uses the murrine/pixbuf engine or another one that is full of hacks to give it some eyecandy.
Does it still happen if you use something liightweight like Mist?
also you can try to run "xfce4-appearance-settings" directly from a terminal(maybe it will print some error messages)

Thanks sixsixfive!
I've tried several themes, and icons (mist aswell) I removed some of them but nothing changed.
"xfce4-appearance-settings" from the terminal launch normally without messages.

does this happen all time or only if you launch the appearance settings from the settings window(embedded)? I notice the same delay if I launch it from the settings manager

I have the delay either from the settings window (embedded) or the settings manager.
Τhe important is that it only happens the first time when I try to launch it (after the boot).
Αfter the first time there is no delay.

A bug report exists for this issue. Oddly enough, I don't experience the delay on Arch.
You can also run xfsettingsd in debug mode to see if any messages of interest show up.
Please remember to mark your thread [SOLVED] to make it easier for others to find

So if there a bug report for the issue I can live with it and maybe sometime in the future to fixed.
