Recent versions of XFCE use the xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin ( http://git.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4 … nu-plugin/ ).

I don't know if the xfce4-appfinder is supposed to find metacity as it is a non-gui program. If you type something like "metacity --version" in your terminal does it show the version or something like "command not found"? If your'e using ubuntu/debian you could also check for metacity with "dpkg --list | grep -i metacity"

it has no name since its a panel plugin!

xfce4 appfinder will only find apps in your desktop dirs($sysprefix/$datadir/applications) metacity or xfwm do not have desktop files because it wouldn't make sense on X11

The plugin name is : applicationsmenu
metacity or xfwm do not have desktop files because it wouldn't make sense on X11
On the contrary , xfwm4 does have a desktop file wich is : " /usr/share/applications/xfce-wm-settings.desktop " .

At least I can't confirm this. When I'm grepping my packages for "applications" theres no program/plugin named like applicationsmenu, although I'm using it instead of the whisker-menu.

Ok, now I understand - you're looking for the metacity config GUI, not metacity itself. There's no such thing except you're installing gnome AFAIK.
For configuring metacity have a look here:

The following exist on my system Xfce 4.12):
$ ls /etc/xdg/menus/
lxde-applications.menu xfce-applications.menu xfce-settings-manager.menu
MX-23 (based on Debian Stable) with our flagship Xfce 4.18.

I have (some of) them as well; but they're not programs, just some kind of config-files.
