We operate an astronomical interferometer. In order to get the several dozen client/server systems to operate, we have to log onto several different consoles as the same user. Unfortunately, these consoles don't all have the same amount of screen real estate available, so coming up with a useful icon layout for all screen sizes is difficult. Is it possible to configure xfce to have different icon layouts for different screen sizes, while still using the same set of freedesktop.org configuration files?

Hello and welcome.
I can point you in one direction.....If you have a look at the contents of the ~/.config/xfce4/desktop directory, you'll notice a number of rc files corresponding to different screen resolutions. Within these files, are icon layout patterns.
A few things to keep in mind:
There have been a number of ongoing and recently closed bugs related to icon placement on the xfdesktop relating to icon positions changing that may affect what you are trying to do.
Under normal operations, the system may change the contents and layout of the icons (e.g. resolution changes, panel placements, sizes, removals, additions). Hence the weird resolutions you may see in those files
If you want to set something permanent, you may need to look at locking these files (read-only or changing attributes via chattr) so that the system (or possibly users) don't alter the layout. Even in this scenario, I believe the icon positions might change during use, but will always reset to the original positions on login.
Functionality may differ depending on the version of xfdesktop that you are using.
