Try this (although, personally, I would use Synaptic Package Manager instead of Software Manager to do it):

Re: Local Server Dictionary , french only , xfce4-dict

Ah. You will, I hope, forgive my mistake, since the link I posted, along with this one:

https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/precise/xfce4-dict/

and this one:

https://searchcode.com/codesearch/view/22776295/

and even this one:

http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/applications/xfce4-dict

all mention "aspell," which gave me the impression that it was, lol.

Maybe you can find the dictionary file you seek by using a search engine and adding one or more of the dictionaries mentioned under "Local dictionary server" (on that last link I listed) as your search term(s), along with the language you want (in this case, French - perhaps spelled natively would be better, IDK).

Regards,
MDM

Re: Local Server Dictionary , french only , xfce4-dict

In the official documentation it says differently:

This program allows you to search different kinds of dictionary services for words or phrases and shows you the result. Currently you can query a Dict server(RFC 2229), any online dictionary service by opening a web browser or search for words using the aspell/ispell program.

I have screwed around with this plugin a lot without great success, and am not sure I believe that description actually matches reality...

I meant that aspell isn't usable as a dictionary .
But he is as a Spell checker : http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/applic … sed_search

Re: Local Server Dictionary , french only , xfce4-dict

BTW: after snooping around on this for longer than I meant to originally, it looks like goldendict can handle local dictionaries easily. I installed dict-freedict-eng-spa (Debian Stable repo), and it automatically found the dictionary and gave me the translation of my test word. Goldendict also works much better than xfce4-dict and has many more options.

Don't have it all figured out yet--for instance, how to get the Wikipedia url to work*, but I am switching to this one for future efforts.

EDIT: watch out for their Forum, it is full of spam.

*Wikipedia search url needs to be

https://en.wikipedia.org/w
