My desktop runs Fedora 21 and Xfce 4.10. I've just bought a smartphone and learned how to get it to show up under Devices in Thunar's SidePane. Is it possible to have it also show up as an icon on my desktop, the way a flash drive does? Even having a panel plugin that does this would be nice. If not, it's not exactly the end of the world, but it would be simpler than having to open Thunar to get there.

Never used a smartphone, but you might try:
Settings >> Desktop >> Icons
then ensure that :
1. Icon Type is not "None"
2. Removable Devices, and its sub-branch Other Devices are selected
In theory that should do the job!

What "sub-branch?"

What "sub-branch?"
Click on the little black triangle next to "Removable Devices" and look in the sub-menu/sub-branch that opens up below it.
On my system, when I plug in my Motorola Droid, I get an icon for the Installer but not the Data ("XT1254") that I can see in Thunar and that gives me access to pictures, music, etc.

What "little black triangle?" You may want to read my question again and this time pay attention to the fact that I'm running Xfce 4.10, not 4.12.

Telling me how to fix the wrong version of Xfce isn't exactly helping, now is it?

Works for me, and I don't have Xfce 4.12 either, but am on an old version. It might be 4.11, though. What component controls this (I'll check my version number)?
BtW, bobwad, thanks for the tip!
