Hello all,
One activity that hasn't been posted about here is the development of 'X-apps', which are intended to be GTK+3 based replacements for their counterparts in the MATE and Cinnamon desktops. More details are here on the Linux Mint blog:
http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3026
I've been using them in Linux Mint Debian Edition v2 (betsy) and they are looking good so far.
Here is the most recent Xfce roadmap which only addresses the critical DE modules for GTK+3 migration (first things first):

Xfce4 app X-app equivalent Gnome 2 app

In addition to preserving 'classic DE' widgets, another intention of the X-apps project is to add functionality back that was removed by the GNOME developers since gnome-shell was introduced. Hopefully this could save all the Xfce / MATE / Cinnamon dev teams some time to use for other long needed improvements.
At this time LMDE2 is the only distro that has them in a repo. They will certainly be available in the upcoming LM 18 Xfce based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Not sure if they will be backported to Ubuntu.
What do you think?
